About Lea Woodward

My Deal

I've been running my own business since 2005. I spearheaded the location independent/digital nomad movement and have been an early adopter of almost all things 'online business' since then.

My projects have been featured in global media, online and off, and you can see feedback from folk such as Chris Guillebeau, Leo Babauta and more about the offerings and resources I've created over the past 10+ years.

You could say I've had a fair amount of practice at showing up and being seen – in big and small ways. And yet...

At the end of 2016 I consciously and deliberately imploded my own life – I left my husband who I'd been with since the age of 17, started a same-sex relationship with one of my best friends and began to explore my adoption, something I'd ignored throughout my life to date.

I've enjoyed being online because it's so much easier to control what is and isn't seen by others – to focus and share only the best parts and hide the parts that are less acceptable (to myself), though they're infinitely more real.

And so my journey has taken yet another twist, as I discover that key parts of the me I thought I was are in fact a bunch of constructs I've cleverly used to keep the real me seemingly safe, liked, admired and loved. Tedious? Yup. Frustrating? Indeed. Liberating? Oh, yes.

I've come to realise that a big part of this is to acknowledge what I really, really, really want to do for a living and it's not quite what I've been doing...

I want to be valued and paid for writing the kind of stuff I've been writing for years, for answering the numerous questions I'm often asked, and for sharing what I'm learning on my own journey to show up and be seen.

I want to be valued and paid for helping others figure out how to step out from behind their own constructs and be more 'them', especially if they're in the business of being online and can all too easily hide their truth there.

I really want to believe that I can create what I want, when I want – that ultimately I can be of value by just being me – and be paid for it...Because if I can do that, then you can too.

What Will You Find Here?

I'll continue to post free blog posts on my own website.

Here, however, is where patrons can access what I've previously classed as 'premium' content – the stuff I'd have created and sold as an ebook, that I'd have packaged as an online course and the kinds of interactions and relationships I've previously shared with clients.

This includes:

  • Prompts, questions and resources (templates, guides etc.) levergaing my 10+ years in business.
  • Highly personal writing that include insights, 'aha' moments and lightening bolts experienced on my own journey that have often accompanied some of my biggest leaps and helped me identify and remove the constructs I've been hiding behind.
  • Recordings or text-based answers to the AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions I run monthly.
  • Anything else I come up with that is helping me on my journey, and that I think could help you on yours.

I may also post the odd online video tutorial – probably about the latest online tech tip I've learned or maybe my hard-won knowledge about how to paint the intricate detailed bits on a stone ;)

Expect to find anything of value – business or otherwise – that I've found, read, heard or thought about that could help you (and me) show up and be seen.

Why Patreon?

I think it could be a game-changer – and not just for your typical creative business types. I don't want to be tied to specific themes, formal course structures or the typical formats for offering value online.

If my experience has taught me anything, the way business (and life) works isn't usually so rigidly structured either – it's wide ranging, all-encompassing and can't always be separated into neat little categories and kept in tidy little themes.

Patreon offers us a model which allows us to create because we love creating, and connect with people who value that goal enough to support it financially. So let's give this a whirl and see what happens, shall we?

Where Your Money Goes...

It does not go into the pockets of fat cat shareholders nor is it used to fund dubious activities overseas. As with supporting any small/micro business owner, first and foremost any money earned is used to live. This means using the funds to:

  • Pay the mortgage & the bills.
  • Put food on the table
  • Keep me and my kids clothed.
  • Pay for their home ed activities

...and generally creating the quality of life I want them to live. We're not extravagant but I do believe in quality over quantity.

There are also costs associated with running an online business – such as:

  • Web hosting – c.£60 pa
  • Mailing List provider – c. £80 pa.
  • Marketing with ad boosts etc. – c. £360 pa.

Once my and the business's basic needs are met, I will put back any profits into this venture – to host meet-ups, events, and anything else creative we can come up with together that would be of value to us all.

I hugely appreciate all your support  – financial and otherwise. Thank you x
