Human beings are visual creatures. We say things like“seeing is believing”, spend endless hours on hypnotizing devices built for people with eyes and nervous systems, and watch TV News, and peruse news sites. If you accept that human beings are visual creatures, we can move on.

Several basic ways of communicating information, including social information exist. There are lists, trees, and graphs. I would argue that lists are a poor purveyor of community, and that trees are overly rigid. Science should imitate reality, not the other way around. Of course, just seeing a static graph would get boring pretty quickly, so why not animate it, as information changes? I would argue that a graph is the best choice for displaying social information. Code wins arguments, so I built a dynamic graph.

What is a graph? I’m glad you asked. At its core, a graph is a mathematical data structure featuring a list of vertices, and a list of edges between the vertices, i.e. pairs of vertices. Something like V={A, B, C, D…}, E={{A,B}, {A,C}, {A, D}, {D, B}, …}. It is a suitable representation for anything from engineering assemblies to business workflows. Note that every tree(organizational charts are usually trees, because culture) is also a graph, but not every graph is also a tree. Following a little bit of Calculus, I was able to make them move. Adding a little bit of computer science will allow for 10x as many vertices and edges, at that point I'll probably combine them into a single vertex by a grouping to be determined, maybe simple visitor selection.

Social Cartography’s main feature is an emerging dynamic, force directed, three dimensional, graph of society. By prompting visitors to input their own information, they participate in creating the collective graph. Of course, I worry about privacy in the age of Facebook, and vow to draw an explicit line between publicly shared and private content. Private content might be one’s own family and friends, or the organizational structure of a company, non-profit, government. Publicly shared information is created when someone explicitly shares something via a button marked“Share publicly”. Data will be encrypted, so that I don't have access to it.

I see the main benefit of Social Cartography in journalism. As it stands, readers across the world study their societies from disparate data sources. They learn the structure of their governments in school, (perhaps even assisted by an organizational chart, but usually a static one) and their processes, (usually not represented graphically). Then they have to fill in the specifics of their governments, meaning important contracts, case law, and election results. Social Cartography/leudla.net will result in a clear picture of society, something I wished I had growing up.

That is what I hope to achieve with leudla, software by the people for the people.
