I am The Girl with the Winnie the Pooh Tattoo! I'm a writer and a teacher in a scary time to be both of these things. I primarily write about my own struggles with mental illness, sexuality, assault and relationships. However, I am branching out into more politically and investigative writing and blogging. As well, I write fiction as well. I hope to include a little something for everyone. Except, sorry, I am not much of a poet, but I will certainly try to write you a bad limerick or a cheesy sonnet if you become a loyal patron!

As well as being a writer myself, I'm also interested in the community of writers and readers. We are also in a time where the best way to make the world better is to come together as a collective force. I have noticed that the people really have the power – to educate in a time of ‘alternative facts’, to resist in a time of oppression, and to support each other in times of economic uncertainty. So, without further preamble here is my big idea:

Thankless Art: Writers in Need.
Help Lex get back on her feet, and her internet turned back on so she can continue to teach the world English and write bombastic pieces of art. Recently her laptop was stolen as well. She needs help to recover the stories lost and of course the value of the property lost. And, if this goes well, and better than hoped, take this to the next level and help support a kind of artists’ fund, if you will.

If the air plane cabin is losing pressure it is important to first put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. In the spirit of this advice, and assuming my life as a writer is comparable to a crashing plane (and it is), I am first putting out the SOS for myself. As well, I have been really taking a lot of inspiration from Amanda Palmer, and admire her candid way of expression and her advice on 'the Art of Asking'.

Recently I have endured some of the most challenging times of my life – don’t worry, once the time is right I will write stories about them. Without getting into specifics yet, I have lost a lot – loved ones, a sense of home, a sense of community, and of course money. I have spent the last six months watching those that I care about most drift into despair – it seems to be a collective phenomenon recently. I have been frantically trying to prevent anymore suffering around me and now it looks like I have dug myself into a hole.

It is in this moment, while my heart and compass are broken that my student loans and other loans that have kept me afloat are finally coming back to haunt me. I am selling my truck to make ends meet, and I have been barely getting by with freelance writing gigs and my English teaching job. So now I am reaching out, finally, for help and hopefully on this journey I am looking for a way to help others as well.

I have said for a long time that writing is one of the most thankless of the art forms – unless you happen to be one of the kinds of writers where there is a performance element involved. In any case I knew all along that writing wasn’t going to make me rich (I do still dream) or beloved by the masses immediately out of graduate school. However, I have been thinking that there is a lot of potential to tap into a greater community, where other writers are begging to be heard and to hear their fellow writers. It doesn’t have to be thankless, or even financially doomed if we come together.

So, what does the community get out of this if you help me?

You will help facilitate the start of a local writer’s group for me to be able to host and help educate writers in person. I will publish 3 well-crafted stories, essays, or articles a month from writers that apply with each contributor getting a split of any proceeds earned after I have reached my personal goal and overhead.

Half of anything over the first $2000 raised, and then anything after 500 a month will go back into supporting other writers who contribute.

The money will afford me the opportunity to put together a steady flow of weekly content from blogs to short stories to essays. I will try to post at least one a week, but will increase as demand increases.

The warm feeling in your heart knowing that you are contributing to my ability to continue my education and work towards my goal of pursuing a PhD and getting back home to Scotland.

What I will do:
I will write content that I hope inspires and I will continue to teach English and help other thoughtful writers find their voice.

If you are interested in contributing a piece of writing to be published once my goal is reached, send a full-length (please keep to no more than 8,000 words) piece of your work along with your artistic goals to [email protected]. You must be at least a $2 patron to submit. Right now I am open to many different kinds of writing and submissions, but things that catch my eye are candid memoir, well-researched political pieces, and clean prose.

After the first $2000 total, this is the mark where I start giving back to the community. If I can reach this goal then I can make sure more people benefit from my efforts.
