Welcome to the my Patreon page. My name is Mark Steven Grove and I am looking for monthly financial support so I can write, produce, and shoot my web serial SHADOW WAR.

To begin with, I would like to clarify what a “Serial” is. A serial is a motion picture format popular during the 1st half of the 20th century that typically consisted of 8 to 15 chapters ranging in length between 7 to 12 minutes each. In most cases a serial followed the journey of a protagonist (hero) versus an antagonist (villain) in a single story-line. Each chapter was exhibited in a theater (generally advancing weekly) until the serial completed. Most chapters left the viewer wondering what happens next, which created the “Cliffhanger” dynamic that would often leave the hero in a perilous position that would conclude in the following episode. The three top studios that produced serials were Universal (Flash Gordon, The Green Hornet, Buck Rogers), Republic (Captain Marvel, Spy Smasher, Captain America, The Lone Ranger), and Columbia (Mandrake the Magician, The Phantom, The Shadow).

SERIALS OF THE GOLDEN AGE

But now the most important question…what is the SHADOW WAR serial about?

SHADOW WAR will follow the exploits of a Ninja vigilante who uses his elite skills to fight evil in a city plagued with crime and corruption. As the story unfolds, the Ninja must also face a nemesis from his past who has ties to a sinister plot that threatens the entire country.

WHY MAKE A SERIAL?
It’s my opinion that the serial concept is perfect for a resurgence in today's tech-based society where people are spending more time watching viral videos and video on demand than ever before. It is my mission to create action packed content that maintains a shorter running time in an effort to accommodate the fast paced / limited attention span of the modern viewer.

WHO AM I?
I am a lifelong practitioner of the Ninja arts. It is this path that has been the guiding force behind all I have accomplished in my life. I first began teaching these skills in 1983 and I have maintained a Dojo (training hall) ever since. I have also worked in the film industry since the late 80's as an actor, fight choreographer, stunt coordinator, firearms handler, pyrotechnician, special effects supervisor, and historical consultant. In 1999 I transitioned to the directors chair and began writing, producing and directing my own projects.

WHY I HAVE TURNED TO PATREON?
I have a son, Hunter, who was born January 25th 1998. It was immediately evident he was special. He was born with three brain abnormalities, cerebral palsy and many other health issues.  Perhaps the most devastating thing is that he had sensory issues that kept him from giving or receiving physical affection. If I could explain what it is like to love someone so unconditionally and not be able to hold them in your arms to console their pain… There are no words.

When he was young it was hard, but as he has grown it has proven much harder. In his final years of high school he was the recipient of continuous negative experiences that we were unaware of, and when we did find out, it was too late… the permanent damage was done. He now has major anxiety all the time. He is especially resistant about leaving the house and he often lashes out physically if his senses become overwhelmed.  As of this writing he is 20 years old and only weighs 71 pounds. He requires constant care and his health continues to diminish.

Thus, my normal process of spending extended periods of time away from home to work on projects is much more difficult. I am dedicated to being Hunter's caregiver and I am honored to do so.  However, I have always believed that in life you must be adaptable, and thus I have turned to writing instructional books, feature film scripts, and developing web based projects that allow me to remain by his side while still pursuing artistic endeavors.

WHEN YOU ARE FEELING SMALL, THINK BIG!
A situation like this can often make people feel powerless, but I have always believed that the obstacles that arise are not there to stop us, they emerge to challenge us as a way of determining if we are worthy.  I always accept... and SHADOW WAR is my response.  That said, such an ambitious project cannot be undertaken alone.  I am joined by a small group of Colorado film professionals who share my passion and my vision.  Like a family, we have a solid bond that has been forged by working side by side on past film productions.

HOLLYWOOD ICONS
Beyond our local crew, I have reached out to two Hollywood Stunt Icons, James Lew and Rick Avery. I have been friends with fight coordinator/stunt coordinator James Lew since 1994 and we have worked on numerous projects together over the years.  James recently won the Emmy for "Outstanding Stunt Coordination" on the Marvel/Netflix series LUKE CAGE and I am happy to have him on board SHADOW WAR as a producer.  James will also be directing one episode each season.

When it comes to stunts, Rick Avery is simply the best.  He is the recipient of multiple awards including the 2009 Taurus World Stunt Award for "Best Vehicular Work" on THE DARK KNIGHT.  Rick has already visited Denver in early 2018 to direct an episode for season one of SHADOW WAR.

INTENSE ACTION
With this level of action collaboration you can expect highly stylized fight choreography, stunts, and practical effects packed into a compelling story that will grow in intensity with each passing episode.  In a nutshell, the SHADOW WAR serial will be in the spirit of the Netflix “Street” Superhero shows combined with elements of the gritty violence seen in films like John Wick and Atomic Blonde.

PRODUCTION STATUS & DISTRIBUTION
Season One (episodes 1-4) are already in production and we estimate they will be completed late summer 2018.  Upon completion, the serial will release on a well known streaming platform with future seasons following in a timely fashion.

JOIN THE ADVENTURE
Now that you have read about the project, I am hoping you would like to offer your support.  Despite the amazing personnel resources we have at our disposal, these episodes have very limited budgets, so your support is imperative to the process. Beyond the rewards associated with your monthly donation, you will also get private access to production photos, action pre-visualization videos, exclusive clips, concept art, and a look at upcoming scripts that will only be available to supporters.  I will also publicly post cast and crew bios as the production moves forward.

Thanks for your time and consideration.  - Mark Steven Grove
