Hi, my name is Matthew, and I create high-resolution, high dynamic range infrared fine art photography, an obsession that began around 2000. Although there have been many evolutions in my artwork, it has always orbited around a style I describe as "dreamscapes" or "magical realism." As a recognized leader in infrared photography, I endeavor to create body of work that is unprecedented in its variety of subject matter, hues and tonal quality.

My love of infrared photography began when I discovered Kodak's HIE film, almost two decades ago. After exploring black and white infrared prints at the outset of my fine art career, I began hand-coloring my artwork, creating original pieces of art, which grabbed the attention of the NYTimes. That was around 2006, and I was then living in Sonoma County, displaying work in several galleries and participating in fine art fairs, the most important of which was the Open Studios event, Sonoma County Art Trails.

In 2008, the top infrared films were discontinued. This prompted an eventual change to digital infrared. I use a special camera converted to record ultraviolet, visible and infrared light, and, with various filters and the editing possibilities of Photoshop, I now have levels of artistic control I didn’t previously know were possible.

I sell my artwork as limited edition pieces (1/100), usually on metal or canvas, but investors can also request hand-colored originals of those images, created with watercolors on archival matte papers. Importantly, there is no conflict between selling my large limited edition pieces and creating smaller postcards or calendars for industry clients.

I am the art director of the largest infrared hub on Instagram: creativeinfrared_global, which I encourage you to check out! I feature a wide variety of the best infrared photography in the world, and make an intense effort to continually feature new photographers and artists. As a leader in the community, I see one of my main missions to bring this ever growing group of infrared enthusiasts together.

I have a website at matthewstuartpiper.com, as well as an Instagram page at matthew_stuart_piper. I update my Instagram page often, so please explore there for art not (yet) found on my website!

Thanks for visiting and I'm looking forward to your participation in my artistic journey!
