Who am I?

My name is Gino Sorcinelli. I'm an east coast-based freelance journalist, part-time academic support teacher, and the creator/writer of Micro-Chop.

I love telling stories about different albums, artists, and songs that highlight interesting aspects of the creative process and the creator’s personal life. It is my belief that most songs deserve an article written about them while many albums deserve an entire book.

What is Micro-Chop?

Micro-Chop is a Medium publication I started in June of 2016. Since first starting Micro-Chop two and a half years ago, I’ve created well over 150 original Micro-Chop playlists and written close to 600 articles.

Micro-Chop pieces unearth fascinating stories about DJs, studio engineers, musicians, producers, and rappers. I turn niche topics into engaging narrative nonfiction articles and shed light on innovative figures in electronic, experimental, rap, R & B, sample-based music, and many other genres.

Micro-Chop articles generally take on three different formats:

The first format weaves together archival research from a variety of articles, social media posts, and videos to make a coherent story. Oftentimes the topic of the Micro-Chop article was only given brief mention by other outlets or it hasn’t been covered extensively in quite a while. By combining the most interesting cited quotes from several sources, I’m able to cover a given topic with greater depth. One of the most popular examples of the format is our 3500-word article about the making of MF DOOM and Madlib’s ‘Madvillainy’ album.

The second article format takes original Micro-Chop interviews that I conduct with different artists and producers and turns them into a narrative story. These interviews include in-depth conversations with 14KT, Seneca B, Easy Mo Bee, Dibia$e, Damu The Fudgemunk, Ras G, Obuxum, Ohbliv, Jake One, Kilamanzego, RJD2, House Shoes, STLNDRMS, and countless other talented individuals.

The third format combines elements of both archival research and original Micro-Chop interviews. A good example of the is our long-form article Paul C, which makes use a wide variety of articles, newspaper clippings, interviews, podcasts, and videos. The article also required interviews that I conducted with many people who worked closely with Paul C and were able to shed new light on his remarkable story.

What brought me to Patreon?

Running Micro-Chop is a joy, but it's also a labor of love. The publication requires a great deal of playlist curation, social media engagement, interviewing, reading, research, writing, and editing. As of now, I do all of this myself.

For much of the first year I worked countless hours during early mornings, late nights, and weekends without making a penny. My audience has grown consistently with time, but I don't use advertising or a paywall, so my options for monetizing my Micro-Chop work are limited.

Patreon seemed like a good way to further gauge my audience interest while making Micro-Chop a sustainable, long-lasting project.

Why I'm grateful for your help:

By contributing to my Patreon page, you can help Micro-Chop grow and thrive. You will have my deepest gratitude and your generosity will help me unearth and shed light on even more essential and overlooked art.
