About Mkay in the Mountains
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page and for your support and interest in my journey! Born an army brat, with parents residing in different states, I am no stranger to living out of a bag. Only now, instead of living out of a suitcase, I often find myself living out of a backpack. Instead of traveling back-and-forth between Texas and Massachusetts by plane, I travel all over the country by foot. I think growing up this way encouraged me to live a pretty minimalistic lifestyle. Never knowing where "home" was always made it pretty easy to just pick up and go. That changes a little after having a child. That love grounds you, in the best way.
Backpacking is a newer hobby of mine, though I've always loved camping and hiking ever since my Grandparents took me over the summers as a child. When my boyfriend, Wesley, read "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed he decided that we should start backpacking as a hobby. Of course, being a nature enthusiast and life-long lover of camping I immediately jumped on board. Already being experienced hikers, it seemed like a small feat for us. So our first (impulsive and relatively poor-planned) trip was an eye-opener but we felt both challenged and inspired by our defeat. Our mistakes only further fueled our longing to learn more and push ourselves harder. Best of all, we are doing it together. Like Christopher McCandless wrote "Happiness is only real when shared." I've found this to be especially true which is why I want to share my adventures, the good, bad, and ugly with all of you. I love meeting new people and making new friends on and off the trails.
I've been an REI Co-op member since 2017 and have since been to several classes and member events. I've joined several hiking/backpacking groups and have spent countless hours doing research (and daydreaming) for upcoming trips. I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a BA in Psychology. I recently lost my job of ten years so am currently selling my own paintings and drive Uber to get by. I love the flexibility and variety my work provides but most of all love having work that allows me to connect with people from all walks of life. This is what I most love about backpacking too. I'm taking this opportunity and "free time" to get out there and make my dreams come true. It is my dream to turn my favorite hobby into a lifestyle and career. I hope that my artwork and recollections of my experiences will be inspiring and helpful to all kinds of people, from all kinds of places...And even if you don't want to venture out into the wilderness, carrying everything you need on your back, maybe you'll at least get a good laugh here and there or simply enjoy a pretty picture.
