I'm basically an old-school nerd who grew up with my nose in a book, surfacing to practice just enough piano to keep me out of trouble at my next lesson. My habit of altering notes and chords of syllabus music to make them sound more 'interesting' did not endear me to my piano teachers. Luckily, I discovered that when you grow up you get play whatever you want on the piano. :D

I became a ballet pianist which is the best job in the world because you are an integral part of a creative organic process that changes every time you sit down at the piano. You have the amazing job of trying to convey emotions, purpose, and present a narrative to your audience without saying a single word. It is this artistic challenge that I find so appealing and why I love to explore character studies and storytelling at the piano.

Experimenting with music also why I love to tinker with covers. Unraveling music and re-imagining familiar melodies in unfamiliar surroundings can lead to unexpectedly beautiful outcomes. It's always fascinating to me how subtly changing one or two chords or the rhythm of a piece can change the entire feel of it - this is especially true in a ballet setting, where, for example, you have the freedom to play a pop or metal song in a grand allegro waltz form and unlock a whole other side of the music. There is a quote I love by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters: "That's one of the great things about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they'll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons." And, I would add, in almost as many ways.

I've been composing since my teens but the origin story of my youtube channel lies with my children. As they grew into novel-readers and shared favorite books with me, I put together little musical projects as gifts for them, re-telling the story through my music and their artwork and posting it on youtube as a surprise. When my daughter began reading the Wings of Fire books, a series of novels featuring dragons by Tui T. Sutherland, I adapted the text of the series' prophecy into song and created an accompanying music video to share the lyrics. I then discovered that this book I'd never heard of before has a very large and very enthusiastic fan base, and I suddenly had a very specific new hobby - writing music and making videos for dragons.

After 42 Wings of Fire-related videos I've now covered 12 books, 15 main characters, a rich trove of lore and backstory, and with the release of the newest book in July 2018 (The Lost Continent) I'm just getting started! As it stands now the Music Mommy channel has 2.4k subscribers and over a million views. Wow. Thanks, my fellow dragon lovers! :D I've also created music and music videos for everything from Warriors cats and vampires to Pokemon and the Franklin Expedition. Themes for fan characters (OC's) are a favorite project, and I also have a collection of sacred music and choral works for children. Through my synthesia tutorials and sheet music publication I've been able to share the Wings of Fire music and my very favorite thing is hearing from fans who've told me that they've prepared one of my pieces for a recital or a competition. (And props to the piano teacher who allows a student to prep an obscure youtube composer's piece over a Chopin Etude at year-end!)

So now onto my next collaboration - a Patreon campaign! Thanks for taking interest in my music and helping me to invest in my channel with better tech - the more tools I have and know how to use the more polished my projects will be (and the faster they'll be produced)! I hope that somewhere in my collection of work is a piece or two that speaks to you, or encourages you to pick up a book or draw a picture . . . because every time we can inspire art and emotion in others than we keep this incredible cycle of creativity going. Thanks for being part of the circle!

Goals

After my first successful Patreon campaign raised funds for a new laptop and recording software I am now in a position to tackle more ambitious projects. My goal is to commission a MAP (multi animator project) to take the storytelling to the next level; I want to retell the third arc of the Wings of Fire series through music and animation (as well as continue to visit interesting characters and scenes from the entire series!) To that end the money I am raising here will go back into the Wings of Fire fanart community. I will be purchasing deviantart points to commission the artists so that their time and work is valued and recognized in a tangible way. Every artist dreams of earning a living from their craft; we ALL love new Wings of Fire content. Together we can support our favorite artists and grow this amazing fandom.
