About New Escapologist

Originally a small-press magazine run by Robert Wringham and friends between 2007 and 2017, New Escapologist featured wise and funny writing about work (bah) and the good life (hoorah).

The central theme was—is!—ESCAPE. You, like Houdini, can escape the mediocrity of the worker-consumer treadmill with WIT, COURAGE, and APLOMB. It's true! Line things up so you can be free to do whatever you like, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone. Think cottage industry. Think part-time work. Think creativity, resourcefulness, imagination.

The magazine has drawn to a close, but it lives on as an online essay series, an email newsletter, a long-running blog, and as a column in the Idler magazine—not to mention a back catalogue and a well-received book. There’s also a new book in the works for 2020.

The newsletter and blog are free for everyone to read, but there's a cost to hosting this digital afterlife and a cost to generating so much lovely content. The solution? Exclusive essays written for subscribers (patrons) in the style of the magazine.

Join us now at the cheerful base tier to receive a new essay of substance every month or so.

Join at the next tier up to also receive an item from the vault: an essay originally published in the magazine. The goal here is to get the entire content of the print mag online forever.

If you've a little more cash to flash, please join the $10 tier to put a rocket booster under things and to get your name mentioned (unless you request otherwise) in the footer of each new essay.

(You can also plump for the low-cost Friend o' Wringham tier for a more personal connection to the brainbox behind New Escapologist and fuel his other enterprises too.)

So let's party. Let's feed the meter and make some happy, useful words come out. Any and all support is received with gratitude. THANK YOU.
