is creating friendships in surprising ways

Hello. I'm Nico.

You've likely seen me tooting as @[email protected] where I try and create discussion and link people through common values and shared experiences. I've been on Mastodon since September 2016 and I'm no longer participating in social media elsewhere because the fediverse is the only place that feels to me like home.

The people I have met on Mastodon have helped me through some really tough times. Since signing up to Mastodon.social I had to leave the job that until that point was my entire life, I became a parent, I began the process of facing up to my addictions, I had many old wounds reopen in the form of my physical and mental health and the realities of the horrible decade I had barely survived in my twenties.

We've formed many great bonds and been there for each other in big moments of our lives on this internet but recently I've been trying to work out how I can help to build on the friendships we have and to make new connections with people we're as yet unaware of. We are all fragile as panes of glass in our own way but many individually fragile things can together create a skyscraper.

So what am I doing here?

I am going to build a series of tools primarily for Mastodon but potentially expanding to platforms such as Twitter and Reddit designed to help us overcome our fears and prejudices and better engage with one another person to person.

This will include an Android app and a browser extension for these platforms to test our perceptions and behaviours in unexpected ways. There will be a series of bots created to use games and challenges as a basis upon which we will engage with and befriend each other. In time, my plan is to develop a new interface which will change the way we share our lives and we experience the sharing of those of strangers.

Why am I doing this?

Because I really think the ideas I have been working on will make a big difference, particularly to people with, for whatever reason, reduced face to face interactions in their lives.

I would love to do this without asking for funding but with my health being what it is I haven't been able to take on permanent work for nearly two years now and the contracts I've been able to do haven't nearly been enough to get by. I'm not writing a sob story here but suffice to say I'll be in a much better position to create with a few quid coming in.

Thank you for helping me try and make the internet lovelier. I'll find a way for you to leave your creative mark on the project, most likely the challenges aspect, as well as keeping you up to date with the progress and making sure there's a massive thank you to you in the credits of the product of each strand to this plan.

If I reach this goal I'll be able to dedicate a regular amount of time weekly to getting these things released the best they can be.
