Short Summary

Who am I?
Short story: Writer, reader, baker, cookie lover, wanna-be editor, theater lover, tea enthusiast, and hopeless romantic.
Long story: Rachel is a young genderqueer individual with a passion for reading and writing fantasy, especially fairy tales. She mainly writes novels and some short stories. She is also in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in creative writing with a minor in publishing and printing arts and a minor in children’s literature. Tea is her favorite drink and her favorite book is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. She is a Pisces and another hopeless romantic searching for true love, which is rumored not to exist in real life. Rachel dreams of one day becoming a New York Times Bestselling author.
What is this project about?
Do you long to learn about magic and become the chosen one? Well, I am afraid to tell you that Medusa Gorgon's Academy for Young Witches is probably NOT the school you should be attending. Every chosen one that has attended has died within their first year because of all the dungeons and the fact that none of the teachers actually care about the students. At Medusa Gorgon's Academy for Young Witches, you will learn about cursing your fellow student and how to stir up trouble. If you're looking for drama, it's the perfect school for you because there's drama among the students as well as among all the teachers. Medusa Gorgon's Academy for Young Witches is accepting of everyone, probably because of how quickly they're losing business. Open everyday at the witching hour and from dusk to dawn.
Why should you contribute?
You should contribute because you want to put out a story that will break out of the box for fictional podcasts. In the book publishing industry, nearly 90% of books are fantasy whereas in the podcasting world, it's switched. The podcasting world needs to branch out. It needs stories that will speak to a broad audience while still allowing people to escape from their mundane and everyday worlds. Some of my favorite podcasts that do just this include Alba Salix: Royal Physician, Axe and Crown (both by Eli McIlveen and Sean Howard), and Hello from the Magic Tavern (by Arnie Niekamp). I would like to be a part of that world and to do that, I will need the money to get equipment to produce the show. Also, I'm an independent genderqueer individual who's working on a podcast entirely by herself and I'm a college student so having experience building a podcast would really look good for me. Also, because I'm a college student, I sort of need the money to literally BUY myself time to make the podcast. I have A LOT of stuff to do in order to get this work into the world, but I can't do any of it without you. So, please, consider contributing to this to share this fun diverse story with everyone.

What We Need & What You Get

The breakdown of the funding:
First, it's going to go towards paying the actors and the actresses. Minimum wage is $15 an hour in the state of Washington and right now, they are just doing this from the goodness of their hearts. I want to be able to pay them so that they will be willing to keep doing it and, possibly, make this their full-time job for the following year or so.
Second, it's going towards buying a new computer. Right now, I have a very problem-child computer. It's really bad at connecting to the internet and really slow at doing just about everything. Also, there are definitely times when my keyboard just stops working and I can't type anything out.
Third, it's going towards buying microphones. I need some microphones to actually record the podcast better than a computer's or a phone's built-in mic. Also, I don't want to have to borrow the microphones from the school campus library every time I have to record.
Fourth, it's going towards purchasing the podcasting software I'll be using. I will be using Reaper and Adobe Audition but Audition is a once a month thing so I will continuously have to keep paying for it. Reaper is a one-time thing but I need the money to buy the license first and foremost.
Fifth, it could also go towards getting sound effects. I'm not entirely certain what I should use for the sound effect library, but I have a lot of sound effects because there's a lot of magic and a lot of spells. I have a gorgon character (so a character with a head of snakes) and I have lots of uses for shimmering and magic kinds of sound effects. Name a sound effect and I'll probably tell you that I need it.
Sixth, it'll go towards paying for artwork and other costs on the merchandise side of things. I will have to pay the artist as well as the platform we use for selling the merchandise, whichever one we use.
Seventh, it'll go towards the website. I need to pay wix (the platform I'm using) to get my own domain and all the necessary features to finish off the website I'm 3/4 of the way finished with creating.
Lastly, it may be going towards renting out recording space. There is a chance that I can use a recording studio here on campus but having that money set aside just in case would make me feel a lot surer about it.
There may be costs that I'm forgetting, but they're not as pressing as most of the matters listed so I'll deal with any extra costs when they arise by myself. If we don't reach the goal, all the money raised will still go towards off-setting the costs of production. I can definitely still do it without the money, but it is always nice to have that as a sort of cushion.
The perks:
Do you like tea? Do you like artwork? Do you like reading scripts? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you'll definitely be interested in the perks that we will be offering. You could have your name on a list of donors on the website and or be named in a future episode. You could receive a complete chibi sticker set. You could get an exclusive tea blended by the wonderful Aun Juli from RiddlesTeaShoppe. You could get an official welcome packet with sticker set, letter from Medusa, mug, t-shirt, tea, and other treats. You could get access to the first season scripts. At the $500 level, you could Skype with the creators of the podcast and get sneak peeks at what's in the works for the students at Medusa Gorgon's Academy. There may be other rewards but I have to work them out with the vendors first.

The Impact

Why my project is important and how it impacts the world:
My project is important because it's supposed to get people thinking about how we treat each other. It supposed to get us thinking about the mistakes we made in high school and how, looking back on it, everything was wildly exaggerated and how one's status in high school didn't make or break who they were as adults. At the same time, I want to show that some relationships created in high school can really impact who we are. High school is a very formative experience and most people discover their sexual orientation or their gender identity then. I also want to show that people who come from different backgrounds can be very much the same and I want to universalize it so that I can show that everyone is the same at their core. Also, I want to show how stereotypes and tropes of any kind are completely unrealistic. For example, the chosen one trope basically says the chosen one has to be flawless and know what they're doing as soon as they turn sixteen. This creates a ideology that's entirely unrealistic and unattainable, and most of the time it leads the chosen one to cockiness. For example, Harry Potter was sort of cocky (not as cocky as Draco but still pretty cocky) in the later books. Like why shouldn't every girl want to date him? He's the chosen one. In modern young adult fiction, the chosen one is a female who has to rely entirely on her love interest. There isn't any chosen one character that has strayed from this. There isn't a chosen one character who's a realistic bumbling idiot who has a lot of awesome power but uses very little of it and is really bad at magic. I want to make a realistic story to tell people, "hey, these tropes and stereotypes are stupid. Ignore those dumb rules and just be yourself. People will still accept you for who you are."
My experience:
I don't have a whole lot of experience specifically in podcasting, but I do have some experience in sound editing for the theatre as well as just general audio engineering. I have also had experience in sound editing for film and TV. So though I've never specifically done podcasting before, I do have a lot of experience in sound editing. Plus, I'm a quick learner and it doesn't take me long to figure once I'm given a short tutorial in it. Also, where would be the real fun in knowing everything?

Risks, Challenges, & Solutions

In every project, there are going to be hurdles that you must get over in order to get to your ultimate goal, but the trick is that you must persevere always. I am a college student so I don't have a lot of time on my hands and I don't have access to the best recording space or recording equipment available but that won't stop me. I feel that the world needs to hear this because it needs a story that represents a wide-range of characters from different backgrounds. The world needs to hear a story that's about real people and not just white-washed, heteronormative characters, or they just need an escape by listening to a funny, fantastical podcast.
I have found that I am very good at leading, not so great at following (except in dance, that is), and as such am very good at producing a podcast. My determination, stubbornness, and control issues will help me solve any and all problems that may arise. My flexibility will allow me to take whatever comes, and I know I can figure out a way to fit my work into the rest of my life. I believe that if you don't MAKE time for something, you're not going to be able to do it. With this podcast, though, I will have no excuses. I will do this and I will GET IT DONE.
