About Fred Detwiler (Farmer Fred)

The statistics are staggering.
Chronic diseases and conditions—such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis—are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems.

  • As of 2012, about half of all adults—117 million people—had one or more chronic health conditions. One of four adults had two or more chronic health conditions.1
  • Seven of the top 10 causes of death in 2010 were chronic diseases. Two of these chronic diseases—heart disease and cancer—together accounted for nearly 48% of all deaths.2
  • Obesity is a serious health concern. During 2009–2010, more than one-third of adults, or about 78 million people, were obese (defined as body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m2). Nearly one of five youths aged 2–19 years was obese (BMI ≥95th percentile).3
  • Arthritis is the most common cause of disability.4 Of the 53 million adults with a doctor diagnosis of arthritis, more than 22 million say they have trouble with their usual activities because of arthritis.5
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations other than those caused by injury, and new cases of blindness among adults.6

In the United States, chronic diseases and conditions and the health risk behaviors that cause them account for most health care costs.

  • Eighty-six percent of all health care spending in 2010 was for people with one or more chronic medical conditions.7
  • The total costs of heart disease and stroke in 2010 were estimated to be $315.4 billion. Of this amount, $193.4 billion was for direct medical costs, not including costs of nursing home care.8
  • Cancer care cost $157 billion in 2010 dollars.9
  • The total estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes in 2012 was $245 billion, including $176 billion in direct medical costs and $69 billion in decreased productivity. Decreased productivity includes costs associated with people being absent from work, being less productive while at work, or not being able to work at all because of diabetes.10
  • The total cost of arthritis and related conditions was about $128 billion in 2003. Of this amount, nearly $81 billion was for direct medical costs and $47 billion was for indirect costs associated with lost earnings.11
  • Medical costs linked to obesity were estimated to be $147 billion in 2008. Annual medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those for people of normal weight in 2006.12

Clearly, there is a very serious problem we have on our hands here.

(Now in the year 2016, sadly, most of these statistics have actually INCREASED since they were initially captured.)

But...what is the solution?
...Is there a solution?

Yes, there is!

Welcome to the Red Bucket Patreon page of Plant-Smart Living!
Hi. My name is Fred Detwiler, but, over the years, my close friends and family members have come to know me as 'Farmer Fred'.

The statistics you just read are staggering, but they can be impacted in a positive way--and, I am living proof of just how powerful transitioning to and adopting a WFPB-PS (whole-food, plant-based/plant-smart) lifestyle can be. (read more about my personal story, below...).

This Patreon page is for those who enjoy my videos and are wanting to help me purchase the tools and services necessary to take my video production to the next level.

When you look to the RIGHT of this page, you will see my milestone goals for this red bucket.

While Patreon only displays one milestone goal at a time, my ultimate goal with this Patreon bucket is to raise the funds that will allow me to launch a new YouTube channel called PlantSmartLivingTV-- a greatly improved YouTube channel that will draw upon many of the lessons I have learned from my current channel.

How Exactly Will PlantSmartLivingTV Be Different?
(And, How Exactly Will YOU Benefit from it?)
  • No YouTube Advertisements
  • Stunning Thumbnail Images
  • Interactive End Cards
  • Video Content Release Schedule
  • Improved Researching
  • Improved Scripting
  • Improved Recording
  • Improved Editing
  • Interviews w/ Plant-Based Doctors
  • Interviews w/ Other Medical Professionals
  • Interviews w/ Other Online/Offline Personalities in the Plant-Based/Vegan Movement
  • Live Streaming Events
  • And...much, much more...

By helping me to obtain these tools and services (as reflected in each one of my milestone goals) to make the above improvements possible, you will effectively be helping me to build a solid foundation of all the tools and services, which each bear monthly recurring costs, that will help my small team and I to support and sustain both my current YouTube channel as well as, this new YouTube channel.

Although my blue Patreon bucket (Coming Soon!) will be in place specifically to provide potential 'patrons' with the opportunity to support me financially on a more personal level, once I have achieved all funding for the actual tools and services that my team and I require in order to make PlantSmartLivingTV a reality, higher milestone goals in this bucket (before actually launching PlantSmartLivingTV) will be to offset the steep costs of manpower related to more highly specialized tasks such as:

  • Researching
  • Scripting
  • Recording
  • Editing
  • Translating
  • Captioning
  • Uploading

At those higher milestone goal levels, before actually launching PlantSmartLivingTV, I will effectively be able to hire very skilled people to help me with those critical tasks that will be required to support and sustain PlantSmartLivingTV.

Proven success and viability of PlantSmartLivingTV, as my team and I here hope to achieve, will serve as the perfect pitch of PlantSmartLivingTV to, quite possibly, a major television network one day!

If you have enjoyed my YouTube videos, and would love to see this vision be made into a reality, please consider supporting me right now for even as low as a $1 per month.

Why Plant-Smart Living Needs Your Support?
Plant-Smart Living is a minority among online plant-based movement endeavors, as my 'Plant-Smart' message has come to encapsulate several powerful components simultaneously. This message has been derived from my own personal story (or HEREHEREHEREHERE, or HEREof losing 65+ pounds of body fat and reclaiming my health, as well as, the lifestyle that I have REALLY been living for over 3 years now.

From the vegan message surrounding the ethical treatment of animals as well as the environmental impacts of animal agriculture, to the tremendous health benefits I have personally realized from adopting a WFPB (whole food, plant based) lifestyle largely sustained by my own vegan-organic (veganic) vegetable garden, Plant-Smart Living has come to embrace these components in a holistic way that I have yet to find available elsewhere online or offline.

In fact, think of the 'plant-smart' message as being a combination of the messages that you've seen in the following films/documentaries like:

  • Forks Over Knives
  • PlantPure Nation
  • Food, Inc.
  • Vegucated
  • Food Matters
  • Supersize Me
  • The Future of Food
  • Hungry for Change
  • Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead
  • Earthlings
  • Cowspiracy

Unfortunately, working tirelessly to spread this message does not come without its own share of costs.

Just ask any of my friends and family members and they will tell you that I am the last one you can expect to ask anyone for money.

As a contractor, having owned my own contracting business for over 40+ years now, I am no stranger to hard work. Not only have I worked hard to instill this ethic into each of my now-grown 3 daughters, but that dedication to hard work has spilled over into my pursuit of spreading this powerful message through Plant-Smart Living.

I truly believe in the power of the 'plant-smart' message to change and save lives--in fact, it is our deep-founded passion for this message that has continually propelled Plant-Smart Living forward, despite the financial constraints we are operating under.

I do consider myself to be very blessed to have a platform such as this, though!

Now with over 300+ YouTube videos produced, the realities of supporting and sustaining video production for Plant-Smart Living are becoming abundantly clear. At this time, Plant-Smart Living is entirely supported by YouTube advertisement revenue which, unfortunately, there seems to be some confusion and quite a few misconceptions about floating around. Even with over 300 YouTube videos produced now, the sad reality is that these videos collectively produce between 25 cents and 50 cents a day, sometimes less, but rarely more--hardly a living wage in even the most destitute of countries, let alone what is needed to offset the recurring costs for all of the many tools and services my small team and I here at Plant-Smart Living require to continue to deliver (and improve upon) the FREE, high-quality plant-based/vegan living video content we create directly to YOU.

These small earnings have been reinvested back into Plant-Smart Living, however, we need YOUR help to take Plant-Smart Living to the next level!

Until later milestone goals where I will be able to hire more specialized individuals to help me with all the many tasks of producing Plant-Smart Living videos, most of my early milestone goals are related entirely to acquiring the tools and services--each with respective month-after-month recurring costs-- needed to realize the improvements in the video-production aspect of Plant-Smart Living that I had mentioned earlier.

Interested In Growing Your Own Food?
I also draw upon my 25+ years of gardening experience to teach you real, practical, self-sustainability principles that will both save you money and provide you with, as I call it, 'fuel for your living'.

Because I am navigating several important but powerful messages simultaneously, it's vital that I present well-researched and documented information, which of course takes ample time and effort to produce. The free content that I provide regularly on various online platforms, like my message, is far reaching and encompasses everything from vital educational YouTube videos, to consistent/regular Facebook posts with gardening tips, WFPB recipes and pictures, and general motivational posts for those who are living (or transitioning to living) this type of lifestyle.

What Does It Mean To Be a "Patron"?
When you become a Patron of Plant-Smart Living's Red Bucket, you are saying that the message conveyed through our video content is important to you and worth investing in. You are saying that cost effective, self-sustainability principles, practices, methods and strategies are something that all humans can benefit from.

I truly believe that education is where the plant-based movement is going to gain the most ground.

By changing minds, we save lives.

Where Does Your Money Go And How Much of It Comes to PSL?
Your support goes directly to the creation of more video content. I truly cannot continue this work without you! Your support will allow me to keep creating powerful videos as well as begin to expand into other areas of education including ecourses, written resources, and (hopefully one day) traveling speaking engagements. With your support, I can continue to provide educational and entertaining videos.

What If You Can't Give?
If you're not in a place to support Plant-Smart Living financially, that is more than okay! There are so many ways to help out-  subscribing to the YouTube channel, watching the videos, sharing them in every place you can think of, encouraging people to check out PSL's channel and website and to connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, TwitterGoogle+Tumblr and Pinterest, suggesting PSL to podcasts, magazines and websites for potential coverage, shopping through the PSL Amazon, LinkShare and Commission Junction affiliate links or Zazzle Store!

Whatever you do to support Plant-Smart Living, I am so very grateful! I genuinely appreciate each and every one of you- without you, I'm just a vegan (and a farmer) in front of a camera - but together we can change the world!
