WHO OR WHAT IS "RIQUIXOTE?"?
Hello Music Lovers of the World! - My name is Ric Dominguez, a songwriter of English and Spanish popular songs. I was branded (dubbed) “Riquixote” after Don Quixote - a knight who was considered crazy when he made it his mission to restore the “Golden Age” of civilization into his own crude world. The “dubbing” happened when I complained to a friend that I thought the popular music of the past was better than what is currently out there - and that I intended to write my own popular songs. I can almost see his disapproving reaction:

“Oh. So you’re trying to bring back the ‘Golden Age’ of American popular music? And not just American, but Latin music too? How crazy can a guy get! Single-handedly battling corporate giants? Dude, you need to talk to Sancho!”

Folks - I don't have a ''SANCHO'', Don Q's realistic, common - sense partner, but I do have a mentor, Tom Cantoral, a critic who knows A LOT (see continuing) about popular music that we all need to know.  And I’m not alone - millions of people have tuned-out of today’s popular music scenario. But, in a sense I am alone and ''single-handedly'' on a mission since I have no gigs, (thus, no fans so no income), no publisher, no producer, no label, no connections, and no real prospects for success in the current music industry - just me and my ''retro'' songs. Not complaining, Friends, just explaining. And I don't sing - lucky for you!  But talented vocalists have been available to demo my songs in both English and Spanish, which I plan to share with you (hear samples ahead).
In the recent past  some corporate players virtually owned media and had a stranglehold on what we could hear by way of new songs. Although those same players also dominate the internet, now at least (and at last), we have access to NEW pop music that we like and choose to hear - and, MORE IMPORTANTLY, we can  SHARE it on this new playing field, the internet.  Lacking promotional resources and connections, independent (read ''rejected'') songwriters like me, cannot be truly independent; we must depend on people for new songs to be ''popularized'' by sharing them - thus supporting and encouraging us. According to critic Tomas Cantoral, we can do nothing influential or consequential without the preference and active help of people; that's what makes music ''popular'' - as opposed to fabricated ''songs'' composed, imposed and promoted by self-serving corporate influence and hype. Please continue:

WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT POPULAR MUSIC?
Friends, it sounds trivial - but that is truly a heavy, important question which only a keen social observer like my friend and mentor, Tom Cantoral, can answer. Here are some of his views:
  • “The origins of popular ‘music’ can be traced to the primeval sounds made by man to help him endure the many incredibly cruel situations and challenges he faced throughout history”.
  • “Virtually every civilization has benefited from the influence of popular music - music meant not only to entertain, but to educate, console, inspire and ennoble common folks”.
  • “Historically, popular music was composed by struggling, anonymous, unpaid self-taught musicians. As a genre it was music from the people, and for the people - never the virtual possession of self-serving entities''
  • “Briefly, popular music in all its styles, has always been the most consequential kind of music if for no other reason than it affects and influences the greatest number of people and their cultures”.
  • “Today some corporate players, with impunity, have set the tone and established a low bar as to  what is acceptable as ''entertainment''. It is not true that they are only giving people what they want, but promote only what increases profits with no regard to social consequences”.
  • Evolving broadcasting technologies allowed corporate powers to hijack popular music as a genre. Today, evolving digital technologies have the potential of empowering people to take back popular music from corporate control - but only with active public involvement and support”.

MY PERSPECTIVE AND GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Folks, let me be clear, when it comes to music, ''it's whatever floats your boat'' as far as I'm concerned. And this is NOT about being against corporations; it's about the kind of defiling music products some have been funding and promoting. I believe capitalism is like electricity - when controlled, it is a great blessing; but if uncontrolled it becomes a destructive force. As many critics have noted: some of  today’s corporate producers are out of control – aesthetically and morally, with vulgarity, violence, and degradation often replacing sophistication, inspiration, and craft. Things weren't always like this.

Thanks to my mentor Tom Cantoral, I believe that popular music is far too important and consequential to be left solely in the hands of corporations - and too influential socially to be considered mere entertainment. Music has the power to make us feel a whole array of emotions, from crying to dancing. When combined with the power of  words, popular music becomes a great humanizing force.

Popular music comes in many colors, tones, and styles. It’s a song’s melodic and lyrical content that should determine its validity as popular music - not its style, edgy “personalities”, or corporate hype. It’s about entertainingly highlighting our sustaining values and aspirations – it’s no place for degrading content. Just my opinion, Folks!

HOW CAN THE PUBLIC HELP?
  • By subscribing, subscribing, subscribing to songwriters you like but be sure to click on the bell.  That way you will automatically be notified when new songs are uploaded.
  • By actively supporting worthy popular music on Patreon - especially by independent composers and performers whose music affects you positively.
  • By actively “liking”, sharing, commenting, or buying independent music that appeals to you. All of these actions have an encouraging effect.

HOW WILL YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS BE USED?
  • I propose to make videos of all my new songs - not only of me composing at the piano but also videos of subsequent demo studio performances.
  • So as to engage you in my creative songwriting efforts, I propose to also include videos of myself working out new musical themes, fragments, and other musical forms.
  • Making independent recordings is easier in today's technical world but please note that producing, recording and promoting new songs is not free.

Your help is much appreciated! Whether by monthly contributions here on Patreon or one-time direct donations.

$1 or more per month

Folks, the whole reason for seeking a patron (or patrons) is to allow me more time to write new songs, and to make them available on a universal basis, with easy accessibility.   To do this I would like to avoid time-consuming ''rewarding'' plans, tiers etc. - trusting in  like- minded , socially - conscious, altruistic patrons and fans for support. I'm proposing to ''reward'' patrons and fans with access to my completed song videos on YouTube.  Additionally, if you like my songs, I propose to videotape and  post  ''works in progress'' as a means of inviting  you to partner with me in the creative process.  Your help in  producing, arranging, recording, and distributing  the songs would  be greatly appreciated. Please listen to samples already imbedded at the end of my overview or under''posts''. By subscribing, YouTube will automatically notify you of new uploads and posts - thus simplifying  the process on an on-going basis. Do please subscribe!

Among the potential song forms planned will be:

"Reflections", ''Sketches'' - #1, #2, etc.  ''Meditations'' #1,#2, etc,  Anoros, Evocaciones 'ENSUENOS #1 ETC,

Goals
0% complete
Friends, traditionally, the goal of virtually every songwriter has been:
1) to be picked up by a publisher or a lable because they take charge of time-consuming chores like promoting, producing, and distributing the songs - leaving time for composers to write.
2) to have songs recorded by known recording performers because they already have followers or fans - songwriters usually don't perform so no supporting fan base.
My immediate goal is traditional : to be able to function solely as a songwriter, and necessarily, as their producer, since my songs have been rejected for not having  ''commercial'' value. That means not having the resources and funds  needed to have my songs arranged, orchestrated, performed, recorded, distributed, and promoted.  Additionally, for the purposes of promotion, it would help to create visualized song videos that contain lyrics along with the music. All to be placed on Youtube - traditional venues not being an option. ..
