About Running Dog

Running Dog is an online arts platform that publishes weekly articles on exhibitions and events taking place in Sydney and regional New South Wales. We believe in experimentation, playfulness and rigour in contemporary arts writing, and seek to privilege nuance and contemplation in debate.

Since its inception, the editorial ethos of the publication has been two-fold. Firstly, to expand the culture of criticism around contemporary art, and secondly, to provide a necessary platform for experimental modes of arts writing.

Running Dog is also a political project. It wishes to (re)consider the precarious nature of online publishing; to remain unbeholden to those in power; to know when to delay or avoid action, and to build collectivity and community. The practice and production of art (and the writing that sits in response to it) does not exist outside of the world in which we live. If anything, what our contemporary moment has shown is how much the art world is situated within, and answerable to, the material context of our time.

For $2 (USD) a month, you can support Running Dog and our commitment to publishing innovative, daring and rigorous criticism and experimental arts writing.

Since launching in October 2017, we have produced 121 articles and worked with 57 contributors. Throughout this period, we have kept our founding principle of always paying writers for their work.

Running Dog has published poetry, critical commentary, sonic responses, a two-part closet drama, the lyrics of Britney Spears and an ongoing series of Letters from the Editor. We have considered film, painting, burlesque and installation; we have reflected on exhibitions and events presented at institutions, commercial galleries, university galleries, festivals and artist-run-spaces. In 2019 we have partnered with Verge Gallery for a series of public programs, including Survival of the Critic and Writing With/About Desire. In May, we launched four poetry micro-residencies, and, in July, announced RD’s First Nations Emerging Critic program.

Above all else, we endeavour to create a multi-vocal space for emerging and established writers who wish to challenge or disrupt the modes of contemporary arts writing. Our contributors include poets, critics, film scholars, musicians and fiction writers.

Top four reasons to donate:

  • Running Dog is currently the only publication producing weekly articles on contemporary art in New South Wales;
  • Running Dog’s content will always be free to read, and we have an unwavering belief in the principles of open access;
  • We are a non-commercial grassroots venture, which allows us to make independent editorial decisions. We wish to garner support from our community rather than solely relying on government funding bodies or philanthropy, and we have no ties to sponsors or advertisers;
  • All donated funds will be used for writer's fees and operation costs. They will not be used for salaries, event costs or promotional material.

Running Dog acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional owners of the land that facilitates the creation of this project. This land was never ceded and was taken by violence.
We pay our respects to their elders past and present, and their descendants.
