Rusted Radishes: Beirut Literary and Art Journal was founded by faculty members of the English Department of the American University of Beirut in 2012 with the intention of creating a space for both emerging and established writers who have a connection to Lebanon. Over the years,we have published diverse work from bordering countries, the diaspora, and beyond. As we evolved, we opened the submissions to people connected to the MENA region. We do not insist on creating geographic borders for submissions, but we do acknowledge that Beirut’s revolving door of influences and cultures, its history, and its perch on the Mediterranean, is certainly at the heart of a unique convergence of voices.

We have published hundreds of rare and interesting works by emerging artists and students. These are published side-by-side with works by established writers and translators such as Marilyn Hacker, Humphrey Davies, Mazen Maarouf, Lina Mounzer, Nathalie Handal, Michele Morano, Yuri Herrera, Lisa Dillman, Elana Bell, Philip Metres, Hayan Charara, Hisham Bustani, Adele Nejame, Fadwa Suleiman, Fouad M. Fouad, Hala Alyan, Chaza Charafeddine, Tarek Abi Samra, and Zeina Hashem Beck; as well as artists such as Fouad Mezher, Omar Khoury, Jana Traboulsi, Elena Monzo, George Azar, Ayham Jabr, Maya Alameddine, Matteo Mauro, Alfred Badr, Michel Karsouny, Tom Young, Elia Tawil, Rudy Chidiac, Rafik el Hariri, Musta Fior, Tracy Chahwan, and Maria Kassab. We have also conducted interviews with artists and writers such as Kasper Kovitz, Patricia Sarrafian Ward, Tanjaret Daghet, Shaden Fakih, and Sara Saab.

The work at RR is a truly interdisciplinary endeavor as we publish writing, translations, artwork, and since recently, graphic narratives and submissions in Arabic. The journal is edited and designed by a staff of faculty, students, and alumni largely from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering at AUB. To date, RR has had over 65 interns from various disciplines at AUB and beyond.

Here's the thing: AUB has been a great support to us, but the funds are limited to projects. We still have to pay a big chunk of the publishing costs, as well as other printing and administrative costs throughout the year to supplement the AUB funds. We take care of these expenses by hosting events and selling journals and other materials we make -- but it's a modest amount, and we are publishing RR each year as a labor of love as we hold other jobs and matriculate. We are pulling through, but guess what we really should have money for?

PEOPLE.

Since its inception, neither the contributors nor the staff members have ever been paid. Many of our interns have stayed on after graduation — for the love of the work and community we are building. But we want to participate in changing the idea that art comes for free. The amount of work that goes into getting an artist or writer into our journal is enormous, it takes time. And time needs money. Art is work.

Become our patron! It will reward people monetarily to bring you writing and art from the heart of Beirut.

When we reach $750 a month, we will hire a part-time Managing Editor who will help us come up with creative new ways to bring literature and art to our community. Some things we are thinking about include: podcasts, focused art books by our contributors, and video stories, essays, and poetry.
