is creating education and activism

There is a belief that to be an activist, to make a difference in the world, you cannot be paid for this work. I believe there is something seriously flawed about this philosophy because it locks good people out of activism unless they are also wealthy.

I work on the infrastructure of our community.  Leading the board of MVK Alternative Lifestyle Society (MVK), hosting several munches per month and organizing our annual conference - these are all critical things for a thriving community, but they are not things that offer me financial support.  I love this work, but it is a unpaid full time job, on top of my full time job that does pay the bills.

So much of what I do does not produce tangible items. I create events. I teach. I write. I volunteer. I advocate. A lot of it is done behind the scenes and often invisible but every bit of it is important work that needs to be done to support my local community.  Things like holding space for victims, coaching people who need to clean up their consent practices and creating community guidelines are features of what I do on a regular basis.

My bandwidth for this work and for being creative is limited by my need to hustle to pay the bills. This means that my creative goals are often put on hold as I prioritize my day job (and my side jobs).  It also often means that the growth of MVK happens at a snails pace because I cannot devote enough time and attention on a regular basis.

In order to realize the new ideas I have and the new events that I have planned, I need to be more sustainable financially. If not, these projects may never be created or I will burn out trying to do all the things.

I want to write a book. Well, several actually. I want to create support systems for marginalized members of our community. I want to take consent education and sex positive education to the wider society. I want to continue participating in the quest to actively dismantle discrimination.

I need your help.  Every small bit helps me reach my goals and, ultimately, serves our community.

How Does Patreon Work?

Basically, folks can donate whatever they want per month. It’s a small recurring amount that you can change at any time. Think of it as buying me a cup of coffee every month. Or Lunch. All so I can spend less time on the hustle and more time on writing, on creating, on serving my local community.

Every bit of support help. It provides me with time, which is in woefully short supply in my world. Deciding to be my patron here, you are gifting me in ways ways that go far beyond money - you are enabling me to share more with you and with the world. Let’s change the world together.

With gratitude,
Sara Blaze
