Welcome to my Patreon!

Hi, I'm sAm, and I like to draw. A lot. Which is good, because I am a professional illustrator. This means I'm usually working under a contract to produce artwork for various companies, or I'm creating paintings for private commissions. I've done a lot of sketch card work, especially stuff with fantasy and pin-up themes. You can find my portfolio on my website,
www.therealmofsam.com.

What The Hell IS Patreon???
I'm assuming most of the people who stumble onto this page may not be familiar with this platform. But if you are, feel free to skip this paragraph. Patreon is a crowd funding platform strictly for creative people. It's a lot like Kickstarter or GoFundMe, but unlike those platforms, you pay a recurring amount every month. In return, you get certain rewards based on how much you pay. These rewards might be as simple as having access to my Patron exclusive posts (which the public never sees), or early access to art reveals. Depending on your pledge level, you might also get digital downloads, high res images, post cards, sketches, and even full color art. Your money will be directly funding a creative and their passion (I hope it's me! 😃), and that is a really big deal.

Why I made a Patreon Account
I initially made this account to help supplement my monthly income so I could focus more on personal projects and less on paid projects. Since 2011 I have been working under almost constant deadlines. Between the stress from the work itself and the financial stress from knowing my art alone can't pay the bills, I dipped in and out of some pretty bad creative burnout between 2016-2018. At the beginning of July, 2017, I picked up a day job to help me gain some financial stability. Sadly, this means I have even less time to dedicate to art, but there is good news! Between my day job and the small monthly income my little Patreon has begun to generate for me, I am getting that chance to step away from paid work and begin pursuing my True North again. And the first project is...super dumb. 🤓

The First BIG Project: I'M TOTALLY WORKING ON A GATCHAMAN FANFIC AND COMIC YO
Synopsis:
Gatchaman: Origins is a fan made, free to all, digital comic. The story details the unwritten childhoods of the Science Ninja super heroes from the original Gatchaman animation released by Tatsunoko Production in 1972. The main focus falls on Ken Washio (a.k.a. Ken the Eagle) and Joe Asakura (a.k.a. Joe the Condor). Ken tragically loses his father at the age of four when the experimental plane Kentaro Washio was piloting explodes. Shortly after, his ailing mother becomes too sick to care for him and he is adopted by his father’s best friend, Dr. Kozaburō Nambu. Four years later, Dr. Nambu adopts Joe Askura after rescuing the boy from an assassination attempt on his family by the evil Galactor. The sole surviver of the attack, Joe is left with a few scars and severe psychological trauma. We see the boys grow up together, learn how they become a part of the Science Ninja Team, and witness the search and discovery of the other three future Science Ninjas.

The Hook: Tragedy! A narrator speaks to us about the birth of character while we watch as two young boys lose their families. We can only turn the pages to find out who and what they become.

My Goal: I aim to capture the original tone of the show with a nostalgic joy ride for 70s-80s-90s kids, littered with easter eggs from our childhoods. Imagine an alternate universe where everything reflects a 70’s aesthetic in futuristic fashion, all warm bright colors and endless summer days of sunshine and retro technicolor. This world appears cheerful on the surface, but underneath something is off, like a droning hum slightly out of tune with the bittersweet taste of broken hearts and fractured innocense, an ominous foreshadowing of what is to come.

Jun's Endless Summer - A 13-year-old Jun riding with a 15-year-old Koji Yabane.

So...Can I handle a project this big?
Yes! At the end of 2015 I completed my largest project to date, a coloring book for adults titled Quest, which was released in June 2016 by Blue Star Premiere as part of their Masterpiece Collection. Not only is it a coloring book, it also serves as a collectible art book, and the entire thing is a wordless narrative detailing a little faun, her fairy friend, and their epic quest to save the love of her life. I somehow managed to write the script, conceptualize the characters, and then draw and ink the entire 40 pages in about 3 months. And those are 40 pages of scenes, no repeating motifs or single character standing on a blank background bullcrap. I'm...still not sure how I finished this with my sanity intact (it isn't), but I feel fairly confident that if I could do this, then I can finish my Gatchaman Origins project too. (And if you want to check out the madness that went into creating Quest, you can totally read about the process here.)

But I Will Need Your Help
This account isn't just to help me generate a little extra income to cover for the fact that I'm taking a break from paid work for an insane side project. It's also for accountability. That deadline stress that I was grumping about earlier? A lot will kill you, but a little is very beneficial (just like medicine!). I need to know I have people waiting on me and expecting me to keep at this project. If I were to quietly work on this all by myself without telling anyone it, I'd probably never get it done. I never get anything done that way. But with an audience looking over my shoulder? Oooohhh man, the pressure is on!

What Do You Get Out Of This?
First off, you get a front seat for this spectacle of one artist taking on what has turned into a graphic novel sized project. Seriously. Hold on to your butts, because I'm not entirely sure what the hell I'm doing and there's gonna be mountains of art as I figure it all out. From kid studies to car studies, perspective to interior building designs, framing to translating real humans into anime and anime not real humans...the prep work alone for something like this is pretty nuts. I will still post my sneak peeks on Instagram and across my social media, but Patrons get to see behind the curtains. Plus, I feel more comfortable sharing larger images and full images here than I do publicly. You get to see the process as it happens, as well as my ensuing meltdowns as I work on the biggest most ridiculous (and utterly useless) project of my life to date. It'll all be worth it though, as I am sure this will lead to an even bigger, far more ridiculous, yet much less useless project. That's typically how it works.
I've setup various pledges and rewards so you can find the one that agrees best with your pocket book. These rewards will grow and change as this account grows and changes and as I grow and change as an artist. (Because I'm in my mid-30's, and nothing but my hair better be growing and changing at this point.) I'm all about throwing goodies at you though, be they digital arts or tangible shinies. I love being able to share my work, and finally having a chance to share all of this, my whole heart really, with an audience but not quite a public audience...well. That's just perfect for me.
