About

Hi there - welcome to my Patreon page!

I'm Alison and I'm a writer and story collector. I'm looking for patrons to support me to write and share my stories and poems.

I’ve written all my life –

  • my first ‘novel’ written in an old exercise book at the age of 10 and currently on tour in my attic;

  • my first published piece - about my little sister who has Downs Syndrome - written at 15 as last-minute RE exam coursework and sent to a magazine without my knowledge when I was 22. (They paid me £5!)

I wrote and created all the time as a primary teacher and for the last ten years I’ve worked as a freelance writer with a decent backlist of published writing.  On topics mostly decided upon by someone else.

I find writing for other people fairly easy.

I find writing for myself – writing the real stories my head screams I should tell – really hard. I only do it when I have to – and deadlines are pretty good for making me have to. (See above re late coursework and exams.)

So when I say I’m looking for support, I’m looking for a cheer-leading team who'll expect me to deliver regular stories whether I want to or not, and will tell me if they're working.

And - I’ll not deny - if that team could support me with a small subscription, too, that’d be great. I’m freelance after all, and have bills to pay.

But it’s not essential. I’ll post the stories up either way.

Most will be stories about me, growing up in a working class family in the 70's (I'm the kid in the orange poncho, above!), getting married as a teenager, having a 'second chance' education at 27, becoming a teacher and mum in my 30's, losing my parents, ending my marriage and building a life alone in my 50's - my first ever experience of living by myself.

I might throw in a few stories about other people, too, or things I’ve written for the children I've worked with - tales of every-day multicultural British school life.

Some might be funny, heartening stories, some might not.  Either way, they'll probably be a bit rough round the edges, but part of the point is to help me work out how to tidy them up. A try-it-and-see, build-up-my-confidence thing.

Having people read and connect with our stories is truly powerful and I love helping others experience that, too.  So as I share my stories here, I'm happy to share the things I've learned about writing and how you can write and tell your own stories to the world, too.

Want to hear a story? Tell me what you want to know!
Goals
$1 of $300 per month
I'll publish an anthology of some of the stories I've collected.
