At this moment, I am working on several projects. One of these is  a book about how to write. Out of Silence guides the reader from the first intimations of a work into realization and completion. It emphasizes the creative process and is designed to help the reader through the many psychological hurdles such as what are called "writing blocks" commonly met along the way, As well as writing 21 books, I have taught writing, both in classrooms and one on one, for fifty years.

In a long essay, called Strong Man, which I have been researching for the last two years, I explore the connection between fascism and sexual predation (including harassment, rape and murder). While probing the psychology behind the lust for power and dominance that drives both dictators and perpetrators, including the ways through which men are often bullied with limiting concepts of masculinity, I explore the ideology of both force and tyranny, might makes right.
As with several books I have written in the past, Strong Man is a collage assembled from fragments of history, memoir, news stories, and reflections, following more than one narrative thread, weaving seemingly disparate strands together, in the way that they are embedded in human experience.
With the support I need, I hope to finish this within 6 months, if not earlier.(The photo I've posted above depicts me at age 10, bending gender in my own way.)

I am also still working on an epic poem about Mississippi River that combines human and natural history into one narrative that echoes the sic of water wending its way through land. The poem depicts climate change and the poisoning of river by industry,  early colonialism (Ponce de Leon), the transport of  people held in bondage and the escape from bondage that took place on the river, the cultivation of wild rice by Native Americas, the Ojibwa origins of the name "Mississippi," the birth of jazz, and much more. I have been working on the poem for over ten years and it is close to completion now.
I've written 21 books, many of which address the critical issues of our time, while influencing movements for social change. My work has won many awards including a Guggenheim Foundation Award, an Emmy, a NEA grant, and in addition to the Fred Cody Award for Lifetime Achievement, one of my books was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
Though a common but sadly mistaken belief is that writers and artists who are well known are well supported, as with many writers of my age and reputation, such is not the case in 21st century America.  If I am to complete these works, I will need your support. I welcome and feel deeply grateful for any support you can give me so that I can gain the time to complete this project.
