About Terminally Nerdy

Hello everyone. Thanks for visiting my little Patreon here and being a fan of my work. Hopefully I continue to amuse, entertain, and inform you!

First off, my name is Clay and I am Terminally Nerdy. It’s a chronic condition, no hope for a cure. What do I do about this horrible condition you may ask?

Well honestly I do a lot of things. I write articles discussing all sorts of things as well as book reviews on my blog (www.terminallynerdy.com). I stream games on Twitch (twitch.tv/terminallynerdy) based on the choices and votes made by my Games Club members. I also post Indie Impressions videos on Youtube (youtube.com/terminallynerdy) as well as the occasional VLog. Quite frankly, I am a multi focused creator with my hand in all sorts of things.

So you might be wondering what the point of this Patreon is. Or not. I am not a mind reader.

WHAT AM I (THE SUPPORTER) PAYING FOR?

Pretty simple really. You pay for whatever content I am producing. Whether that be Twitch Streams, Blog Posts, or Videos on Youtube, your support is applied to all these things. Basically, your supporting helps pay for what amounts to a part time job for me, as I spend 20-40 hours a month on Terminally Nerdy Content between streaming, writing, reading books, networking, and playing video games for research and discussion. You basically are helping me in everything I do and hopefully one day turning this into my main source of income. One day!

WHAT ARE YOU (TERMINALLY NERDY) SPENDING THE MONEY ON?

I try to be very transparent with what I do here. Here is a list of the things the money may be used for:

  • New stuff to Stream and Review
  • Personal Expenses. As of January 2018 my work moved me to a new location that now involves a 1 hour 15 minute commute one way, and increased my insurance costs. This has caused me a bit of strain so at times I may need to use funds here to help stay afloat in meatspace. Basically I work 60 hours a week, and only get paid for 40 of it. As of January 2019 my Health Insurance costs are now increasing on top of everything else, so yea...
  • My Web Hosting (Roughly $120 a year with the domain name)
  • Video Equipment Upgrades (Portable Camera, Better Camera, Tripod, ect)
  • PC Upgrades: Eventually my PC will no longer be able to keep up.
  • Travel Costs to attend cons outside the State (to do v-logs / articles about, but I need better portable camera equipment first! This would be expensive cause we got tickets + hotel + airfare! Never mind that I would want to take my wife with me).  $300 a month means one con every two years, most likely PAX.

As far as rewards go, I have 3 tiers. One is the general level, and you can pledge as little as $2 a month to gain access to these benefits. You can of course pledge MORE than $2 a month if you choose to do so, just make sure you select the amount you wanna pledge.

The $2 Tier: A Member of the Supporting Cast – This is the standard tier that everyone gets upon pledging. No matter how much or little you provide me each month, you get all the following benefits.

  • Access to the Terminally Nerdy Discord Server VIP Room (Directly connect with me!) The server is public but there is a special patron room.
  • Patreon Only Updates on my life and work!
  • Early Access to Posts/Videos/Reviews. The instant I am done with something you all get access to it.  This can be weeks or even MONTHS in advance.
  • Discounts and Other Cool Things!
  • Voting for the “Terminally Nerdy Game Club” streamed game (See below)
  • The Discord Title of "Supporting Cast"
  • Your name in the end credits of any Stream or Video I do!
  • Vote on the monthly Patreon Indie Impressions Choice to help decide an indie game I do a video on each month.

The $5 Tier: The Main Cast / Games Club – For those of you who are interested in helping me with my streaming / reviews and want a more interactive option then just hanging out in them, you can become a Stream Supporter. What do you get at this level?

  • All the Supporting Cast benefits
  • Ability to Nominate the next game that I will stream, to be voted on by all patrons & twitch viewers. See below for details
  • The Discord Title of Main Cast as well as Games Club Member.

The $25 Tier: Indie Impressions Sponsor - So, this tier is fairly unique. Only 1 slot is available for it at this time. It is designed for someone who really enjoys my indie impression videos, but wants to have some actual direct input on them. For $25 a month, you get the ability to choose 1 game for me to do an indie impressions video on every 3 months / 4 times per year. Your benefits for this tier include:

  • All benefits of the Previous Tiers (both the Main and Supporting Cast levels)
  • Ability to sponsor / choose an Indie Game for me to cover on my Indie Impressions series once every 3 months. See below for full details.
  • Name at the end of each video as a Sponsor, with a shoutout to your twitter/website/youtube/ect if you wish
  • Unique Discord Title of "Indie Sponsor" for as long as you hold this tier.

When you first pledge you will charged the $25, I will contact you via DM on here (so make sure your email is up to date) & you will get to name 1 game that fits my Indie Impression rules (it has to be an indie game, a non-triple A game, or a niche title that is playable on my PC or Switch, doesn’t matter how new or old it is however). Then every 3 additional billing charges (months) you spend for this tier you will get to name another game for me to cover (so at charge 4, 7, 10, ect). You do NOT have to use your request the instant you earn it and you can in fact save them up, however you can only request one game per month. Example: You have been pledged for 7 months total, so you have earned 3 games to request (1 on sign up, one for charge 4, one for month 7). You have only used the 1st, so you still have 2 more games you can request. You can then request one in month 4, and another month 6, and you will earn another on month 7. I will at any time let you know how many you have earned / saved up, and how many you have used (I will be tracking this information on a spreadsheet). I will contact you if you build up several requests but haven’t used any but by and large you will be responsible for contacting me to check if you have available requests.

You can continue to earn and request games for as long as you are a paying patron. If you cancel your pledge, you will keep any earned game requests, however you will not be able to use them until you are a patron again. If you cancel and then restart at a later date, you will start exactly where you left off, with the new charge for returning taking up one of the charges. (So if you have paid for 6 months, and canceled, then came back, you would be charged for coming back and be at month/charge 7, thus earning a new request).  This does mean if you were to pledge and then cancel immediately you would get a game request, but would have to pledge for 2 additional months in the future to get another request.

Since there is only 1 slot, if you have to cancel and someone else takes the slot, you will have to wait until I open a new slot or that person cancels in order to continue. You will also get the benefits of the two other tiers, so you can still nominate games for my stream as a Games Club Member, and you will also have the ability to vote on the Patreon's Choice Indie Impressions video for each month, and the Games Club votes as well. Plus all the other discounts, early access, and so on. See the other tiers for details on all the benefits you get!

Also, on any video where you are the sponsor, I will give you a credit at the end of the video specifically as well as verbally mentioning that the video is sponsored (cause FCC regulations require such things). I will even put your website, youtube, or twitter handle in the end credit portion as you request. These videos will also be the first thing I work on when requested each month. Unless I have a video that I promise a game dev to do first (at which point it will go promised vid, then this one, then the Patron Choice/Any Others).

Finally, you will get the unique "Indie Sponsor" title in my Discord for as long as you hold your pledge as active in addition to the usual titles for the Main/Supporting cast tiers.

Now, you might be curious as to the pricing. There are two reasons for this.

Reason 1: My time is valuable, and my day job pays me around $17 USD an hour currently. You are basically paying $75 for a video every 3 months with this tier (4 vids a year), which translates to about $16.50 an hour for each video (as the videos generally take me at minimum 4.5 hours to make overall). Obviously, if the video takes me longer, the amount I am making per hour decreases, so you get a bit more value for your dollar in that case.

Reason 2: The price helps offset the cost of the games as I may need to purchase them. Daemon X Machina, which is a niche title and fits the indie impressions series, was a $60 game. Greedfall, a AA level game and another that fits the indie impressions label, was $50. These tier helps offset the costs of these games dramatically for me, and thus enable me to afford them much more easily. Bear in mind that having to buy the game also cuts into my own per hour value. Example: I buy a game for $20, which means out of the $75 you are paying overall for the video, I am only getting $55, which translate to about $13 per hour now for my work or less.

The Terminally Nerdy Game Club: What on earth is this?

To help create some more interaction between myself and my patrons as well as let my Patrons and Twich Subs have a bit more control over the content I provide, I came up with this idea. First and foremost, when I call for them, my TN Games Club patrons AND Twitch Subs will be asked to nominate a game (a Narrative Driven Video Game or Indie/NonTripleA game! If you are not sure, ask me before nominating as once you submit a game its locked in) for me to play. They will respond to a Google Form specified in the announcement post. After 2 weeks, I will choose 2 to 4 of these nominations, and create a Poll for my Twitch Subscribers & Viewers, and EVERY Patron to vote on. After 2 weeks, I will see which game won the vote, and THAT game will be the focus of my streams. I will play this game to completion or as close to completion as I can get barring any insane difficulty spikes OR bugs.

For the record I can play pretty much any game console wise that could be safely emulated (so Atari 2600 up to PS1) and my PC Specs are a Core i7-4770k 3.5ghz CPU, 16gb DDR3 Ram, and a GTX 970 4gb GPU.  I also have a Nintendo Switch and Capture Card so Switch games are on the table now.

I am supporting you on Twitch, can I get in on any of this?

Why, yes you can! Sadly, I can’t easily allow you access to nominations as those posts will only be here, however you can join my Discord and let me know that you are a Twitch Subscriber (And provide me your Twitch Name so I can verify it) and you will get the Twitch Cast title. You will also be treated as a Games Club Member, able to nominate a game for me to stream.

What do you mean "Discounts and Cool Stuff"?

I understand that's a really vague sort of thing to offer. But for example, this is what my patrons get right now:

  • 10% Off any purchase at TabletopLoot.com
  • 30% off anything at TeePublic
  • A copy of DMs Guild Jam #1 and #2
  • A custom "Knights of Nerdy" dice bag design offered by Greyed Out (you still gotta buy it though)
  • Discounts at Rook and Raven for cool Journals

And hopefully down the road I can get more cool stuff! Basically any time I work on a product for sale, the requirement will be that I get a copy for you all. Any time I judge something (for example, more of the DM Jams) I will be giving copies to all of you!

When do I post things?

I TRY to post things on my blog every two weeks at the minimum, possibly more often.  I stream currently every Sunday starting at 4pm EST and going for around 3 hours.  I post Indie Impressions videos on my Youtube channel every 2 weeks as well, and they also go on my Website at the same rate.  But Patrons get the articles and videos the instant I finish them so when they go up on Patreon is completely random.  I could go a week without posting a thing, and then you might get 4 things on 4 days in a row.  Podcasts are random, but Patrons get em before anyone else.

How Many Hours per Week do you work on Terminally Nerdy? Why do your goals have a "Per Hour" rate?

I basically reserve all my free time outside of errands to Terminally Nerdy work. Whether that be networking, playing games to review, streaming games, reading books, making videos, creating images, promotion, ect, its all TN related.

In general, here is a breakdown of my time spent each week on TN.

  • 3-7 hours Streaming on Twitch (Sat / Sun) - I stream on Saturdays playing an Indie Game, and Sunday's playing a game chosen by my Patrons / Viewers. Between the two days its usually around 6 hours, but it can vary. Sometimes I only stream Sundays.
  • 2-3 hours per Indie Impressions video - Usually only 1 a week right now, but sometimes I can bang out more.
  • 1-2 hours self promo work (via tweets, scheduling tweets, talking to people ect)
  • 0-2 hours image work / production work / overlay work
  • 2-6 hours playing a game to review it on my Website (variable depending on free time)
  • 0-2 hours on the Podcast
  • 0-2 hours on writing reviews after finishing the game

So at minimum, I spent 8 hours a week on Terminally Nerdy. At maximum, 22 hours a week. The average here is 15 hours a week (8+22 / 2) generally, which is 7.5 hours on Saturday, 7.5 hours on Sunday. My only days off from my day job.

Now my time is valuable, and while I do all of this work for free, I would like to get paid for my time. My day job currently pays me $17 an hour for my time. So my goals show the "per hour" rate that I would effectively be getting based on weekly / monthly hours worked. I want to be clear that one of my goals IS to do Terminally Nerdy full time, 40+ hours a week, and be able to afford health insurance and taxes, and to do that takes quite a bit based on my current standard of living. Obviously if I could go higher, I would like to. Less time at the day job, or no time at the day job, simply means MORE content produced, and more time spent doing what I love. Hell if I could reach minimum wage (around $8 an hour) it would help me out tremendously.

And while you might find me laying this out a bit odd, I want to be very clear what my eventual goal / end game is with this.

Anyway I hope this helps explain all the nonsense, tomfoolery, and shenanigans I am about.

Thank you for visiting, and if nothing else please remember to be Kind to each other, and stay Nerdy.

Goals
$159 of $300 per month
At $300 a month I will start seriously considering conventions outside of my home state of Florida at least once a year.  Something like PAX East / South would be the most likely candidate.
