About The Influence Project

Calling all Music Connoisseurs, Fine Art Lovers & Funksters
THANK YOU for stopping on our page!

'The Influence Project' is an acknowledgment of the pioneers of Funk, Soul, R&B, Afrobeat & Hip Hop. It will show musical connections and raise awareness to where it began and the characters involved in changing the shape of music. The project is also an attempt to educate as many artists have been overlooked in the past 60 years, because they didn’t fit the brief. We aim to address these discrepancies and highlight the impact these musicians have had on the music industry, an impact still felt today.

'The Influence Project' will also illustrate connections to outstanding contemporary artists so that younger generations can appreciate the significance of these relationships.

My name is Lorayne Crawford and I am a curator and producer working together with photographer and director Alexis Chabala. We are a creative team based in London.

Born out of our shared passions for music, photography and film, we created 'The Influence Project' 4 years ago. Over this time, we have been privileged to capture the portraits of over 100 artists.. both 'still' and 'moving' including; George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Bill Withers, Roy Ayers, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Public Enemy, The Roots, Anderson .Paak, Robert Glasper and many others.

Working together with these Legends has been a huge honour. All have participated without fees, but with a belief that our project is something important and something that has not been done before.

With help from family and friends, we have juggled much of our 'real lives' and work, managing to self-fund the whole process including our first exhibition being held this summer at Somerset House, London (27th June - 22nd August 2018).

The exhibition tells stories through music, portraiture and film at the same time as documenting musical history. The experience is visually stunning, educational and uplifting with live music events programmed each week. It has had glowing reviews from both press and visitors so far!

We are now hoping to find like minded Patrons with vision to help support 'The Influence Project' so we can continue including more artists such as; Chaka Khan, Mary J Blige, Smokey Robinson, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, Aretha Franklin, Sade... Our list is so long!!

We also want to publish a book to accompany the next exhibition and ultimately tour, bringing the exhibition to major cities in Europe, America and Worldwide.

The last 4 years have been extraordinary! and humbling... They have also been full of music, hard work and relentless dedication to get to this point. We have many ideas and stories we would love to share with you if you decide to get involved and join our creative journey.

You can support 'The Influence Project' from as much as $100 per month, or as little as $1 per month. However you decide to help, we want to say a heartfelt thank you in advance.
