About The Seldoms

Would you like to be The Seldoms dance partner? We need a steady hand.

The Seldoms is in its sixteenth season. We've operated as an artist-run organization for almost two decades! The terrain of arts funding has always been a rocky one, but the current landscape is even rockier. Foundation grants are increasingly competitive. The Seldoms’ future depends on growing our base of individual support.
We invite you to learn about our company and history.
We hope to earn your interest and support.

We are a Chicago-based dance company that values making intelligent, visually rich dance theater driven by inquiry. We ground our inquiry in contemporary issues and the history of art and ideas, toward our pursuit of bold, exacting and potent physicality.

Under the direction of choreographer Carrie Hanson, the company is committed to bringing audiences an expanded experience of dance that ignites thought around real-world issues. We collaborate with practitioners in fields including theater, architecture, installation, video, sound, fashion, and science. Nationally recognized collaborators include visual artists Bob Faust, Fraser Taylor, Faheem Majeed, Jackie Kazarian, and Anna Kunz, composer/sound designers Richard Woodbury and Mikhail Fiksel, playwright Stuart Flack, musicians Chihsuan Yang and Timothy Daisy, and fashion designer Maria Pinto.
With works on issues such as the 2008 recession, climate change, and most recently a trilogy about power and powerlessness in America, The Seldoms has built a reputation for “well-crafted and researched works that don’t hold forth a political agenda, but look instead at how these towering issues reflect back on our own humanity” (New City, naming The Seldoms Best Local Dance Company in 2012).

The Seldoms' 2015 work, Power Goes, was a commission by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and recipient of a prestigious NEFA/National Dance Project Grant, and has toured to ten US cities. They've performed widely in Chicago, nationally, and have developed international connections in Russia, Taiwan, and Scotland, where in 2017 we exchanged with Glasgow visual artists to develop "Toolbox", a resource for dancemakers. The company is also known for works in unconventional sites such as a truck garage, an Olympic-sized outdoor pool, and a Chicago Landmark park field house.

Artistic Programming
In 2018-19, in addition to performing and touring repertory, we’re building a new project in collaboration with a fantastic artistic team, marine scientists, and ocean conservationists. FLOE is a dance theater work that explores madness, delusion, oil extraction and the vanishing of Arctic ice, to premiere Fall 2019 at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Education Programming
The Seldoms is comprised of artists and educators. We inspire and invest in young movers and emerging dance artists. As an Arts Partner in Residency at Pulaski Park, we give free dance classes four times a week, providing neighborhood kids exposure to formal dance education and the movement arts. We also offer training opportunities, inviting the broader dance community into our Open Company Classes and an annual Summer Intensive. On tour, we introduce dance & performance in inventive, focused ways to connect with audiences, students and communities. In our upcoming Fall 2018 residency of RockCitizen at UW-Madison, we'll teach master classes and also lead a group of community movers in a Promenade Protest Performance.
