Why am I here? That is not an easy question to answer, but unlike everyone else, I have a mission “to be normal.” Let me back up. My name is Donovan Simpson. I was born October 3rd 1996, and I don’t remember much about being a baby. But I do remember falling a lot. When I was only 6 years old, I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), which is like feeling sick but like 10 times that. Everyday I push myself to be better than normal, to be “different.” I hope everything works out in the end. In 1st grade, I remember being in class and feeling normal like everyone else. In 2nd grade, I met my best friend; we had play dates; and we were very close. In 3rd grade, I got this one teacher that was picking on me because of my FA. She brought out my rage, and I had to learn to control it. In 4th grade I had the best teacher and that made me feel really good about myself. In 5th grade, I had my wish granted through the Make A Wish organization to be a silver power ranger. It was cool at the time for me. I made the movie, and then it was shown at a red carpet premier in Peekskill at the Paramount Center for the Arts. In 6th grade, I had spinal fusion surgery. After I had the surgery, it felt like I was a different person and that whatever life I had was gone. Then in 7th grade, I came home one day, had a lot of Laffy Taffy, and got my blood sugar tested. It was 600. The next day, I was still at 600 so I went to Dr. Liebel’s office to find out if I had diabetes. She said that I got diabetes because I have FA. In 8th grade, I was in my math class and they were teaching algebra already. From that, I learned how to do math in my head. I remember in my history class that I was looking out of the classroom window and watching the sun hit the ground. I was thinking how much longer until I’m completely out of school. It made me start to think about what I wanted to do. In Saunders Trades and Technical High School, my first impression was that it was just like middle school. Unfortunately, the first year was hard, and it didn’t feel like I had a purpose. Then the next year I got to choose a major, and that’s the first thing I got to choose for myself. That gave me a purpose again to do great things in that class, graphic communication. The next year I had to start thinking about colleges to attend and what I wanted to do with my life. From graphic communication, I gathered that I like drawing, and I like video games so why not be a game designer. In eleventh grade, I put all my effort into everything. My goal was to walk across the stage for graduation. It was good to feel that I was “normal.” The college that I chose was Westchester Community College, and I am pursuing a business marketing degree and art certificate. My ultimate pursuit is game design. I am trying to get a degree and then transfer to a four year university and that is the reason I am here.
