I am a sole parent of a 4 year old. My daughter's father abandoned us when she was 8 months old. I live in a regional area to be close to my mum, who now also needs care.

In my spare time I am working on a campaign to demolish a punitive change that was made to how single and sole parents receive their social security money, this is called ParentsNext. The stated target of ParentsNext (PN) is women and it forces women with a child as young as 6 months to engage as a 'jobseeker' (this is change from 8 years).  It's punitive and women are issued 'demerits' if they miss an appointment potentially resulting in their payments being stopped. It seems even women who don't qualify for the program (not eligible) are being forced to participate also. The PN providers are incentivised with money to have women use their service. This is the privatisation of single parent payments, and I think it is disgusting how it devalues the work women do parenting.

So far I have:

1). Engaged pro bono lawyers who have identified breaches of International Law and a potential domestic law application that is being explored;

2) Started a Petition to make PN voluntary: https://www.change.org/p/australian-government-mak...

3) Created a Facebook page where women can ask for advice and receive support from me and other women on the page : https://www.facebook.com/Parents-Against-ParentsN...

4) I have engaged a few media outlets which has resulted in two articles so far

a) https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/no...
b) https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/de...

5) Have connected with several MPs and am in the process of either working with them or pressuring them for action- together stakeholders have succeeded in getting a SENATE INQUIRY into ParentsNext commenced;

6) Have agitated on Twitter page (under 200 followers) so much that I have pissed off upper management of a ParentsNext provider who then threatened me in an email (I'm really proud of this one);

What I'm going to do next:

Now that the Senate Inquiry is confirmed I have many more journalists to choose from. I also have a couple of very interesting angles to attack PN from that will definitely disrupt it. I am working with an MP to get my petition tabled. The lawyers are working on something that I think is very serious and will hopefully make ParentsNext untenable.

Whatever time I have will be used aby keeping the pressure up on ParentsNext and fighting for social justice for single and sole parents receiving parenting payments.
