Descent to Rising: 18 years of photography and recent paintings, by Angela M. Carter, created while in the midst of defeating depression.

I believe my art was ingrained in me, and many like me, in order to survive.. Descent to Rising is an exploration of the art which distracted me, lead me, soothed me and saved me. Currently 7 billion, worldwide, live with some type of mental illness. Please join me, Friday, May 5, 2017, 5pm-8pm, in raising awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month. Let's embrace a stigma-free environment, and world, for those of us which live with a mental illness.

Background:
Much of the photography ranges back as far as 1997. My Diddy bought me a professional camera and I never left home without it. I was drawn to the contrast between light and darkness, shadows, the resilience of nature, reminiscent emotions through image and signs of hope. This show consists of photography and small paintings which I've created while in the grips of depression, ranging from bleak to extremely hopeful images.

***Note: Pale Fire will be hosting a poetry reading/Q&A (in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month), Touched With Fire (with poet/author Cynthia Atkins and I) on the evening of Tuesday, May 16th. 7pm. (Touched With Fire is a book, by Kay Redfield Jamison, exploring the link between bipolar disorder and artistic creativity)
