About African Artist Martie
I document lives.
A mining town on the West Rand of the Gauteng Province in South Africa, is where I was born and bred. Randfontein. Not having much to do in such an entertainment-less town, a child’s imagination finds the space to create imaginary worlds and universes in art, music and stories. As this is ingrained in me even now, whilst living in the Jakaranda city i.e. Pretoria, I continue escaping to these worlds.
With every visit, I become more and more aware of Randfontein’s degradation and increasing poverty. So many childhood memories and worlds get lost if one does not assist in capturing and preserving some of the stories. From the Muslim man who still owns the Ice Cream shop.. to dark corners of mystery and mysticism.
Some images may mean nothing to you, but they have stories ingrained within me. Stories I want to tell

Document the mining towns to the west of Johannesburg in South Africa. The people who live, work and struggle to survive here are unique in their disconnected, honest and bizarre view of the world. I want to document their unique being and show the world their reality through my photographs
