"I was thinking about killing myself, but then I started reading your books..."

That was the beginning of an email I received from a teen boy several years ago when I was on the verge of leaving writing behind.  I was tired of living under the poverty level, tried of barely scraping by, and was about to search for something more secure, but when I received that email I knew I couldn't quit.  I went from feeling like a failure to feeling as if I had accomplished something truly important.  Maybe that boy would have chosen life without my books, but maybe what I had written saved his life.  I don't for a moment believe that my books carry that kind of importance to most readers.  For many, they are entertainment or a temporary escape from their life, but for others they are something more.  That something more is why I keep writing.

I've been writing novels about gay youth, especially in rural and small town settings, since 1999. When I started, the only gay novels were about those who lived in big cities .  I set out to cover new territory, featuring non-stereotypical characters who didn't live in New York City or Los Angeles.  Some of my characters, such as Brendan & Casper are featured not only in their teen years, but as adults in various stages of their lives.  My stories are about boys, young men, and adults just like those who you may know.  I've always made myself accessible to readers and Patreon will allow me to take that a few steps further (check out the rewards).

Why am I seeking patrons?  Aren't published authors rich?  Most authors have other jobs and get to spend very little time writing.  I write full-time so have only my writing to support myself.  Published authors (except for the likes of J.K. Rowling and Stephen King) aren't rich.  I need patrons to help pay my rent and other bills because I can't make enough from the sale of my books do so.  I don't take expensive vacations or live in a big house.  I rarely leave Bloomington, Indiana and my leisure time is spent walking my dog Skye, reading books, and watching DVDs from the library.  I'm seeking patrons so I can continue to do what I love and produce books that readers enjoy.   I hope you'll support my novels and help me to keep creating them.

Tiers
Hear About It First
$2 or more per month

You'll hear about new novels the very day I begin writing them and receive status reports on how the novel is progressing and changing along the way.   I'll also let you know about other projects, such as audio book versions of my books and you'll hear it all before anyone else.

Early Access
$5 or more per month

In addition to the above, you'll get to read select scenes from the novel I'm currently writing at least twice a month.  Don't worry, I won't give away too much of the plot, but you'll get a look at what I'm writing, the very day I'm writing it, from the first to final draft. Now and then, I’ll also send out .jpg photos of locations used in books, which will let you see exactly what some of the locations look like

eBooks
$10 or more per month

Note: This is available only to those who have an Amazon.com account since Amazon will not allow me to send a gift book to those with Amazon.uk or other Amazon accounts (I have no idea why, but I'm told it's impossible).

All of the above, plus you receive my newest books as they are published in Kindle format, the moment they are released.  You’ll also be listed as a patron in my future books. Pledge level must have cleared for the previous month to qualify.

Name a Minor Character
$20 or more per month only 1 left

All of the above, plus if you stick around at least three months, you get to name a minor character, pick their hair and eye color and some of their interests.  Feel free to put yourself in the book.  If you keep sticking around, you get to do the same for each new novel. I publish at least two novels a year and as many as six!

Name a Major Character & Autographed Book
