About Vegan Sidekick

I became vegan at the start of 2001, and while it seemed like a logical decision, I was aware that most people weren't interested in hearing about it and I had already been in many frustrating conversations as a vegetarian prior to that, so I had pretty much given up trying to reason with people. But by the start of 2013, I was feeling ashamed that I had become so apathetic. I was choosing an easy life, while animals were being lined up and killed. I had the opportunity to actually do something more to help them, and so I made a facebook page... A relatively minor thing to do, but I just felt like I should be doing *something* to get the word out, and try to help in some way.

I didn't expect my project to take off like it has, and I have been overwhelmed by the reception that my page has received. People from all around the world read my comics and share them, and most importantly, they are getting people to go vegan. Vegans find the comics useful as stress relief, for inspiration on how to deal with particular irritating arguments, or for sharing directly to people who have made those arguments... Personally I think they serve well to mop up the nonsense that can follow after a more serious attempt at vegan advocacy has already been implemented. An informative article, or a documentary, or video of slaughter - those are what SHOULD work on people. But the reality is that so many people will respond to those videos with "Yeah but..." and the type of excuses that they will make, aren't really being addressed in those kinds of articles and videos. So my comics deal directly with the mentality of the general population in an attempt to leave no stone unturned, regardless of how ridiculous that stone is.

Since I began the page, people have asked me to make a Patreon account so they can support me. Until now I've said no, because I am not doing this for money. But I've come to realise that people want to give me something back, because I've done something of value for them. I try to avoid having an ego, but it's difficult to balance that with a healthy amount of pride, and I guess I've swung too far into having no pride at all, despite knowing I've helped a lot of people and animals with what I've done.

Recently plantbasednews.org listed Vegan Sidekick as the number one vegan instagram account to follow... and things like the Vegan Sidekick Selfie Room at Doomies Restaraunt in Toronto remind me of the impact that I have had. I have attended several VegFests in the UK, and people who talked to me have really touched me and made me realise what I've achieved. It seems crazy to me that these simple comics that I make in my lounge could mean so much to people, but apparently they do. And I know what it's like to want to be able to say thank you, so I'm choosing to lighten up on myself and allow people to give me something, if they want to.

So, thank you so much for considering to donate to Vegan Sidekick, I am humbled that so many of you have asked me to set this up. I am just glad that I've been of some use to you. This patreon page exists for people who have wanted to support my work over the years, not for anyone wanting more from me. I don't want to make content and lock it away behind a pay-wall, I will continue to make comics and content on social media as usual. It may be that I make a post now and then on here of a more personal nature, but I don't know. Thank you!
