WALKING FOOTBALL - A DEFINITION

Walking football is a variant of association football aimed at keeping people aged over 50 involved with football if, due to a lack of mobility or for other reasons, they are not able to play the traditional game.

WALKING FOOTBALL ONLINE COMMUNITY

I am the operator of www.Walkingfootball.com which is an online social community for walking football teams, players and fans to share ideas, ask questions and promote their clubs, festivals, tournaments, leagues and fund raising activites.

Though more importantly, this online community offers the ability for people to keep their social connections made on the pitch constantly alive throughout the whole week – when mobile, and online at home alone.

I, myself found the benefits of walking football invaluable, when I first started playing whilst attending a EuroFIT course run by the Stoke City Community Trust & Dr. Christopher Bunn from the University of Glasgow.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL BENEFITS OF WALKING FOOTBALL

In addition to men aged over 50, the health benefits of walking football are now being linked to helping men and women of all ages and disabilites including mental health problems, rehabiliating heart attack survivors, fitness for stroke survivors , making a difference to the lives of the older generation living with dementia to name but a few.

Game On Wales reports the extended benefits of walking football includes, " our group have become friends, stay in contact with each other between sessions, write blogs and newspaper articles, have been on radio shows, found employment and become Game On volunteers."

Not only does walking football help fitness and wellbeing, it brings social opportunies back into the lives of those who no longer have partners, friends or family and lived a life of solitude.
