About Wild Heart Sanctuary

Hello and welcome to Wild Heart... a Sanctuary For All!

Wild Heart has been a long time dream of mine. Ever since I was a little girl, I imagined a magical, safe place where I could live with my family, provide sanctuary to animals, grow abundant gardens, live in harmony with nature and invite others in to experience it all. That dream never faded. It only grew more intense as I aged, where it was bound to manifest and bloom into reality.

In 2012, while living in Los Angeles, I came across an online ad that was looking for a farm sitter at an off-grid homestead in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The photos of saturated green fields and blue skies were a stark contrast to the anxiety-inducing city life I found myself living in. I felt an urgent desire to uproot and move, and was able to convince my (then) husband that this life change was a necessity. We had an estate sale, sold the majority of our possessions and tent camped our way across the country with a baby, three dogs and a cat. I arrived in a state of total bliss. It was finally happening! All those years of dreaming landed us in a beautiful place I felt called to settle into. And thus, Wild Roots was born.

Wild Roots was my first attempt at creating sanctuary. After our farm sitting gig, we found a place not far away to call home. We had a handful of seasons with very successful gardens. I rescued a variety of animals from mini horses, a litter of puppies to baby goats, and I organized community events like seed swaps, potlucks, and road cleanups. I felt that my purpose was coming to fruition, but eventually the realities of rural living took it's toll on my partner and marriage.

In Summer of 2018, we separated. What initially seemed devastating, became a clear path to freedom. I found and closed on a larger farm property closer to town and made the decision to put my home on the market. While I wait for my current home to sell so my two children and I can live on the land full time, I have excitedly embarked on a slow transformation of the raw 13.26 acres. I found a couple looking for a safe place to live temporarily with their two rescued cows, and offered the land in exchange for some animal care. As I write this, my two goats, donkey, and their two cows call Wild Heart home. There's space for more, but first we need some basic utilities and a better shelter. I'm asking for your help to raise funds for a well to be drilled so we have easy access to water for our residents, and funds to build a small barn. As time goes on, our needs will change, but these two are the most critical.

The community aspect of this project calls to my heart. Throughout the years through social media, I have received hundreds of messages, emails and comments from others who shared a similar dream. Many of those people may never fulfill that dream, but Wild Heart can serve as a medium for those seeking sanctuary. Whether it's for the day as a volunteer, a vegan farm-to-table dinner, or a week long stay, there will be a variety of options for our community to be involved. Your donations and involvement will help Wild Heart blossom to it’s full potential!

Thank you for your interest in my project. With much love and gratitude, Beryl.

We desperately need a small barn! Currently, the animals have solid temporary shelters but we'd all be much happier if they had one permanent housing structure. We have the perfect spot picked out for it and are ready to get started as soon as we start raising money!
