About

Absurdly detailed annotated transcripts of tales well-calculated to keep you in...Suspense!

The Suspense! radio show ran for twenty years on CBS, from 1942 to 1962, over 900 episodes! Film stars flocked to director William Spier looking for a chance to tingle the spines of American listeners. Frequently casting against type, Spier made murderers and villains of the likes of Danny Kaye, Jack Benny, and Donald O'Connor.

The storylines sometimes came from classic suspense authors like Edgar Allen Poe, sometimes from contemporary authors like Dorothy Sayers, and sometimes from in-house writers playing with the conventions of the suspense genre.

Over its two-decade run, Suspense! gave audiences chills and sometimes laughs by taking on wartime propaganda, post-war long night of the soul, even things like the housing boom and beatnik culture.

I'm transcribing each episode of the series, annotating each with trivia and analysis. Come see what I find!
