About Writing the Other

Help us help writers learn how to combat cultural toxicity and create fiction that represents and reflects the world.

We are Nisi Shawl and K. Tempest Bradford and we teach online classes on how to write inclusive, diverse fiction through WritingTheOther.com. We firmly believe that it is possible to write "the Other" sensitively and convincingly. We also believe that authors who want to create characters whose gender, sexual orientation, religion, racial heritage, or other aspect of identity differs from their own should have the best tools possible to do this and do it well.

In 2016 we created the Sentient Squid Scholarship Program to make our classes more accessible to writers who can't afford them. Since then we've been able to provide over $10,000 in Sentient Squid scholarships to single mothers, disabled workers, and other deserving applicants. Approximately 20% of our alumni have already benefited directly from scholarship funds.

Going forward, our goal is to set aside one quarter of all spots in our classes for scholarship students and others in need of financial aid. In order to provide an easy way for our generous donors to support us on a monthly basis, we're turning to Patreon.

We have four major goals for this Patreon:
  1. Fund the Sentient Squid Scholarship.
  2. Create more free resources for writers.
  3. Pay an assistant to help run classes.
  4. Launch the Reading Club for Writers.
Check the Goals section on the left for details.

Backers can get:

  • Early access to our bimonthly video resources (panel discussions and interviews with authors and editors).
  • Exclusive access to live Q&A sessions with Nisi and Tempest.
  • Discounts on classes.
  • Free On Demand Writing the Other webinars.

...and more. See the Rewards section on the right for details.

Will you help us grow this program in 2019 and beyond? Your monthly support will make it possible for more voices to tell more inclusive stories.
